Polar Challenge commences August 10th

by Peter McCorquodale on 2 Aug 2013
The Fleet starts - SSAA Winter Series 2012 Peter Frame
In this, the 30th Anniversary year of the Shorthanded Sailing Association of Australia, eligible yachts are invited to take part in our Polar Challenge, on Saturday 10th August.

Now by the name of the race, you may think it is a race to the South Pole, but actually the race is a test of how well you know your boat's speeds, or 'polars'.

The race is from the start line in Hunter Bay, Middle Harbour, out to 151º 30’ E, and back to the finish line inside Sydney Harbour, as quickly as possible. The trick is to decide which is the best way to get out and back based on weather and sea conditions, whilst optimizing your yacht’s potential.

Yachts can be sailed solo, two-up with autopilot, or three-up without autopilot. The race is Cat 4, around 25 nm in length, and entries close midday 9th August. Monohulls and multihulls welcome.

The entry list already includes Bruce McKay’s Wasabi, Line Honours winner in the recent double-handed Melbourne to Osaka race, plus SSAA Champion for the last two years, Doug Cuming’s Voodoo Spirit.

Full details including the Entry Form are on the website at ssaa.com.au, or if you have any questions call Peter McCorquodale on 0414 344 914.
