Phuket Kings Cup Regatta Voted Yachting Event of the Year

by Event Media on 11 May 2007 The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta has taken the top event award at the Christofle Asia Boating Awards – 'Yachting Event of the Year'. This honor follows a record year in December 2006 with over 100 boats entering the event and with a record media turnout. It is the second consecutive year the Phuket King's Cup Regatta won this prestigious award.

Phuket itself attracted the popular vote among the 20 judges, who rewarded Phuket for its first-class boating facilities, which include modern marinas, state-of-the-art boatyards and prime chartering, naming the island 'Asia’s Maritime Capital'.

“We are very happy to have received this award by such a prestigious organization. The commitment of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta’s sponsors, participants, media and support really show as the event keeps growing year after year. We were pleased to have a record year last year and we fully expect this December’s event to be another phenomenal year,” said Santi Kanchanabandhu, President of the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organizing Committee.

“As the leading supporter of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, we are very pleased to see the event take this top award. Given the hard work and passion those involved put into this event, we are not surprised to see it awarded this honor. This event is a top event on our calendar every year now,” said Nigel Cornick, CEO of Raimon Land PLC.

The judges also took note of China’s rapid emergence as a modern megayacht builder by voting Guangdong-based Kingship 'Best Asian Megayacht Builder' in the 100ft-plus category – the third time that a Chinese boatyard has won the award at the annual event.

And one of the main movers and shakers in Malaysia’s burgeoning boating industry, Datuk Patrick Lim, the organizer and promoter of the Monsoon Cup, was voted 'Personality of the Year'.

“The annual Christofle Asia Boating Awards is our region’s way of rewarding and acknowledging the great work of our ever-expanding leisure maritime industry. We can all feel proud to be part of this exciting time in the industry’s history as we celebrate the hard-won achievements of both the winners and the nominees,” said Olivier Burlot, CEO of Adkom Media Group, organizer of the awards.
