Welcome to Sail-World.com New Zealand for May 14, 2014

For the next four days the Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show is the place to be - if you live in Auckland or are visiting.
This is a very commercial show, which means plenty of great toys to check out, and bargains to be had.
Claimed to be New Zealand's largest, most popular and most varied boat show — and, according to those who visit boat shows in both countries, the best boat show in Australasia!
The Show is 60 years old, and was originally conceived as a fundraiser by the Auckland R-Class Squadron, whose volunteers ran it for many years. Gradually it has evolved and re-invented itself into its present form.

Our earliest memory of the show is being on a freezing cold stand in the middle of winter, surrounded by others - always experts in their field - dong all manner of boat building, fibreglassing, painting and demonstrating all those essential skills required by the do-it-yourself home boat builder.
The show was mostly yachts, along with a massive flooded pool in front of the main grandstand, which ran a variety of ongoing action - racing from power boat racing, water skiing and yacht racing. Whether the pool would spring a leak in its lining was always a source of great media intrigue - and occasionally it obliged.
After those halcyon days, the Boat Show lost its way a little for a few years, but under professional and very competent management it has carved out a new life for itself and now achieves the rare feat of catering for all marine interests.

That concept has been extended to new levels with the inclusion of the Have a Go activities including sailing, kayaking and others - so that kids can rock up, with no experience and get their first taste of a new marine sport in a pool at the boat show. Budding young America's Cup hopefuls can try their skills at the Yachting New Zealand stand over at Weta Sailing Central, where the Sail-World stand is also located.
There's over 30 different small yachts in Weta sailing Central ranging in size from Optimists to fully rigged 18ft skiffs. America's Cup skipper, Dean Barker's P-class is also on display in this zone.
We will be running a range of sailing videos, and the latest online content - including one video we hope to have, on an exclusive Boat Show only basis.

But there are a host of other great exhibits at what has now become a very upmarket show, still in touch with its grass roots - which has to be the small sailing boats and the powerboats. There's always plenty to see in the various fishing sections, plus some great bargains to be had as Boat Show-only specials.
If you want to catch more fish than you catch last year - don't miss the 'Top Catch' Ask the Experts demonstrations which start at 11.00am and run through to 4.00pm each day.

Your biggest problem at the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show will be finding enough time to get around all the exhibits and action.
A new feature this year will be the Big Boat Marina with yachts and sport launches ranging up to 16 metres. All afloat and all available for you to get aboard, and have a look for yourself.
You can book your ticket online at before you leave home, or buy at the gate as usual.
There's also some great prizes to be won at the show - details in this issue.
