IOC Aussie VP calls a Spade a Spade on Rio preparations

AOC President John Coates
The Australian Olympic Committee President and International Olympic Committee Vice President, John Coates, has described Rio's preparations for the 2016 Olympics as 'the worst I have experienced' and 'worse than Athens' (2004).

Coates, who has made six visits to Rio as a member of the IOC Coordination Commission responsible for overseeing Games' preparations said today the IOC has been forced to take 'unprecedented' action embedding IOC experts in Rio's Organising Committee to ensure the Games proceed.

Attending an Olympic Forum in Sydney he told delegates construction has not commenced on some venues, infrastructure is significantly delayed and water quality is a major concern just two years out from the Games.

The preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games are the 'worst' ever seen, according to International Olympic Committee vice-president John Coates.

The Australian said the IOC has taken 'unprecedented' action by placing experts in the local organising committee to ensure the Games go ahead.

'The situation is critical on the ground,' he said.

He said that, in his opinion, this was 'a worse situation' than in 2004, when there were concerns about preparations for the Athens Games.

In Hyeres Sail-World interviewed Brazilian six time Olympic medallist Robert Scheldt who has more to say on sailing on Rio's Guanabara Bay. We will publish that interview tomorrow.

Volvo Ocean Race - embedded reporters. The dedicated media program was launched with a fanfare last year ahead of Volvo 2014-15 and it's no secret that the teams have had trouble finding talent. Hilariously the Team Brunel went within 10% of the world 24 record on its very first offshore sail and the now sacked embedded reporter, wrote nothing on that amazing feat but filed a story on his post passage supermarket shop.

So it's a pleasure at last to read the daily reports from Corinna Halloran, on trial on board Team SCA as they blast across the Atlantic. She is a keeper!!

Team SCA, the all Women crew, with its three Aussies along with semi-Australian Carolijn Brouwer are working hard. They are sailing legs of the race and will do lots more before the October start.

We are reminded of Chris Lewin, the skipper of the 21 and under Sydney 38 crew who sailed south to Hobart in 2004. Largely discounted because he and his crew were inexperienced, they sailed to Hobart and back as part of their preparation and surprise surprise did well.

Australian Oliver Tweddell leads Finn fleet in Miami  Walter Cooper /US Sailing

Ahead of the Finn Europeans, just about to start in La Rochelle France, we will publish an interesting assessment from coach John Bertrand, the U.S. Finn silver medallist from 1984 of progress of the two Australian Finn campaigners Oliver Tweddell and Jake Lilley.

Lots more news from Australia and beyond...
