Gosford, Mallorca and Magnetic Island - Aussies Sailing

Victoire shortly after the start in Broken Bay - Mount Gay 40th Gosford to Lord Howe Island Yacht Race  Ashleigh Evans
Gosford to Lord Howe, another feather in Daryl Hogkinson's Cap, his Cookson 50 Victoire, the 2013 Rolex Sydney Hobart is the likely IRC overall winner in the current Gosford to Lord Howe race.

But a return to the regatta circuit has been flagged by the Victoire team who have announced they will be sailing at Magnetic Island Race Week 2014. Bob Steel's Sydney Hobart winner Quest won the IRC division there last year.
Entries for the eighth Magnetic Island Race Week are open now.

Just a week away from the Pantaenius Marine Insurance sponsored Sail Port Stephens. Last year there was an East Coast Low during the regatta but racing continued. Better conditions are expected for another big fleet.

And after that... the Audi Australian IRC Championships off Newcastle.

Offshore, in Spain, a big Australian contingent at the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Palma Mallorca. The highlight for the Sail-World Team was the blanket win, 1, 2, 3 Laser Medal Race with Tom Burton winning Gold and set to return to his World Number one Laser ranking.

Good result too for Darren Bundock and Nina Curtis, third overall in the Nacra 17 class. By the time they reach the September 2014 ISAF World Championship if the Aussie duo are sailing anywhere near the technical level that Bundock and Ashby reached in their Tornado days expect to see more Gold.

2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup Mallorca - Mat Belcher and Will Ryan (AUS) during the 470 Men's medal race  Thom Touw ©

A dip in the results for Belcher and Ryan after 18 straight wins, they have recorded a second and a third. Not wrist slashing time says Victor Kovalenko who expects his charges to turn up the wick in Hyeres in two weeks. Sail-World will again be there to watch.

We talked at length to Peter Conde, Yachting Australia's High Performance Director in Palma, who was very upbeat.

Pete said 'We will have our ups and downs on the Road to Rio of course but we have probably got 50% plus more events where we have got realistic medal prospects so we have got to have some depth in the squad to be able to realise the potential. '
