Auld Mug report and a Rio update—Sailing news from the U.S. and beyond

Oracle Team USA - training with Team Australia, Friday March 14, 2014  Beau Outteridge/Oracle Team USA
American Rome Kirby is rapidly making a fine name for himself as a professional sailor of rare talents. The Newport, Rhode Island-native has already won the America's Cup as an offside trimmer for Oracle Team USA in the 34th America's Cup, and he has also already completed his first 'lap' of the planet aboard Puma Ocean Racing's 'mar mostro' in the 2011/2012 edition of the race after having served as a back-up for Puma during their 2008/2009 VOR campaign. Kirby is considered a shoe-in for a spot aboard Oracle during AC35-especially if a nationality clause is enforced-and is currently in Sydney, Australia training with his mates aboard one of the American-flagged team's AC45 class catamarans.

'It's only just started to sink in the last couple of months,' reported Kirby about the last six months of his life. 'After the America's Cup ended there was so much going on, it didn't really set in until just after Christmas when I finally had some time to slow down and hang out and process it. What we did in San Francisco was really pretty cool. It was a huge comeback and it's not something I expect to see again.'

As for his return to the Auld Mug, Kirby envisions an entirely different landscape for AC35. 'Mentally, I think having done the Volvo Ocean Race really helped me,' said Kirby. 'It was a big deal for me to be able to take things on one day at a time. But I think for this time around [in AC35], a lot of us who were rookies last time are coming back as veterans now, and I think we'll be more mentally prepared than we were. I think we were pretty raw last time.'

Also in America's Cup circles, news recently hit the street that Adam Minoprio (NZ) has joined the Italian-flagged 'Luna Rossa' squad for the 35th America's Cup. Minoprio, it will be remembered, was the 2010 World Match Racing Champion, and he also sailed aboard 'Camper', Emirates Team New Zealand's Volvo Open 70, in the 2011/2012 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. Meanwhile, in Olympic sailing news, it's no secret that Rio De Janeiro, home to the Rio Olympics 2016, suffers from serious water-quality problems. Guanabara Bay, the venue for Olympic sailing and rowing competitions, reportedly receives 1.3 billion liters of 'sewage, effluent, oil and run-off' per day, of which only 40 percent is estimated to have been treated. Fortunately, the Brazilian government is attempting to tackle this situation, well in advance of the Games.

Guanabara Bay  Secretaria de Estado do Ambiente do Rio

'With all the efforts that the Rio de Janeiro State Government are performing in order to clean up the Guanabara Bay, the sailing community can expect a great event in the 2016 Olympic Games,' wrote the communications department for the Rio Secretary of the Environment in Rio de Janeiro, in response to a question in a Sail-World interview. 'The floating solid waste and the Bay's water quality are the main subject at all government levels. This issue is a commitment assumed with the International Olympic Committee and also with everyone who lives or travels to enjoy Rio de Janeiro city.'

And finally, be sure to check out the great image galleries of Oracle Team USA's recent training sessions aboard one of their AC45 class catamarans on Sydney Harbor, which they shared with Team Australia, the Challenger of Record for the 35th Americas Cup.

May the four winds blow you safely home,
