Here's wishing you a peaceful and happy festive season

Santa is coming  .
The festive season is upon us again, that mad present-buying craze that most of us indulge in at this time of year and which the kids love. For those of you who are peacefully at sea or in a secluded anchorage somewhere, think of us – wishing, just a little, we were there with you.

As we approach 2014, it's a good time to remind our readers that we are always looking for good cruising stories – from your club, from your personal experience, from your sailing organisation. Sail-World produces two sailing news magazines for cruising sailors – one for the northern hemisphere, and another for us in the southern hemisphere, with mostly Australian and New Zealand local content, as well as world news from all our oceans.

Our circulation for this news magazine that goes directly to your inbox is 55,000 and individual stories on the site are picked up by a vastly wider audience as they permeate the digital world via Google.

You can even upload your story and pictures (we love pictures) via our Contributors System at the top right corner of the www.sail-world.com site. But remember, this site and news magazine are not for competitive events – when cruising, sailors just love being on the water and don't care who gets there first.

Once again this week there's a vast range of new sailing stories for the cruising sailor – telling tales, giving great advice, bringing the cruising news from the world directly to you.

Of particular note are some of the safety articles, disguised as stories – Lee Mylchreest tells of an investigation as to why a collision occurred between a visiting Swiss yacht and a large Australian ship; there's some variation (and humour) world-wide about what to do next if you accidentally let off your EPIRB; and Sheryl Shard shares her top ideas about what's really important (and not much is) when you are cruising.

OMG I've just set off the EPIRB  .. .

If you ever contemplate high latitude sailing you won't want to miss the video of the glacier almost falling on a boat; on the subject of falling, we discuss what to do if someone falls from your dinghy; and there's some nifty advice about improving your halyard tension.

Glacier coming  .. .

Wherever you are, blissfully sailing up there in tropical waters or back at home fighting through the Christmas traffic, here's wishing you a peaceful happy festive season however you choose to celebrate.

Sweet sailing!
