Big Boat Challenge, Olympics, Hobart and the Northern circuit

SAILING - SOLAS Big Boat Challenge 2013 - Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Sydney - 10/12/2013

START LINE  © Andrea Francolini / Rolex
Another Sydney to Hobaort epic super maxi battle looms as we found out at the SOLAS Big Boat Challenge today.

The Black Jack crew are in full racing mode as they prepare for Hobart  Andrea Francolini

The ISAF Sailing World Cup in Melbourne provided a great opportunity to check out the progress of the Australian Sailing Team and Development Squad, just two and a half years ahead of Rio 2016.

Lots of encouraging signs with the win by Bundock and Curtis in the Nacra 17, the closeness of the 49er FX racing, Nath and Goobs emphatic display in the 49ers, the Finn Squad, the Lasers and of course the 470's. Not much positive for Australia in the RS: X where China is dominating the fleet.

Changes ahead in the circuit with next year's World Cup event in Melbourne could be the first ever where the top 25 competitors in each class are racing, without single entry per country restrictions that would make it more competitive than the Olympics, fascinating to contemplate. Time will tell...

We still have reports and features on the World Cup and on Sail Melbourne, we will report on the Miami OCR and will be in Palma Spain to witness the launch of the Aussie European campaigns.

Ahead we have the Summer Ocean racing season with Sydney to Hobart, Melbourne to Hobart. We will be camped at the CYCA from the 23rd and then in Hobart. Interesting to see that Sean Langman is going south with Wharro this year.

We have Sail Port Stephens, the IRC Nationals out of Newcastle, then further ahead it's the 25th annual Airlie Beach Race Week, Hamilton island Race Week from August 16-20 and right now lock in August 28 to September 2 in your sailing calendar, the dates for the eighth Sealink Magnetic Island Race Week.
