Mini, Jacques Vabre, Clipper and VOR news from Canada!

Aymeric Belloir claims Series boats victory in the 2013 Mini Transat  ©Jacques Vapillon / Mini Transat 2013
After 18 days at sea, Benoit Marie wins the 2013 Mini Transat in a 2007 traditional proto design boat; the scow designs do not rule... yet! Only five protos have crossed the finish line but the great story is Aymeric Belloir's finish with Series boat; quite an achievement to place better than the majority of high performance protos.

The story doesn't end so well for Canadian Diane Reid; equipment failure forced her to limp to and stop over in the Canary Islands where the race committee put an end to her race as she had fallen three days behind the fleet and the safety of the escort. This breakage on the mast followed an initial stop in Portugal where she repaired the bowsprit on One Girl's Ocean Challenge. Diane and her team are looking for your help to get the boat to tight side of the Atlantic Ocean; the original plan was to sail the Mini, not incur additional campaign costs putting the boat in a container. Bring our girl's boat home at www.onegirlsoceanchallenge.com

Only a handful of Class 40 yachts remain at sea in the Transat Jacques Vabre; the winners were GDF SUEZ (Rogues-Delahaye) in Class 40, PRB (Riou-Le Cam) in IMOCA, FenêtréA Cardinal (Le Roux-Y. Elies) in Multi 50 and line honours winners Edmond de Rothschild (Josse-Caudrelier) in MOD70. My personal favourite Gabart and Desjoyeaux team suffered a dismasting on their Open60 MACIF.

Henry Lloyd, led by Canadian skipper Eric Holden, holds the overall lead as the teams make their way from Albany to Sydney around Tasmania in the Clipper Round the World Race. GREAT Britain and PSP Logistics were not so lucky at the start of race 5 as Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, chairman and founder of the Clipper Race, explains: 'There were a number of boats approaching a mark and all fighting to get round a buoy, and as a result of trying to get round that buoy, there was a collision.' Both teams are fortunately back in the race after assessing damage on shore.

In Volvo Ocean race news, Dutch sailor Bouwe Bekking returns for a seventh bid in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 as skipper of a new campaign launched by the Dutch international recruitment leader Brunel. They are the fourth team to officially announce their participation in the upcoming VOR, joining the all-female campaign Team SCA, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Team Dongfeng from China.

Chris Stanmore-Major has recently joined the Spirit of Canada Ocean Challenges Team and will help Canadian offshore sailor Derek Hatfield with the Volvo 60 Spirit of Adventure training platform. Derek just delivered the yacht to the Caribbean ahead of the 2014 racing season; check out the details in the update if you are looking for an offshore sailing opportunity like no other!

Below, you will find Sail-World Rob Kothe's recent Tom Slingsby interview; Rob caught up with Tom to chat about his role with Oracle Team USA's victory in the 34th America's Cup, what the team might have in store looking forward to the next AC event and what personal projects are featured on his agenda between now and then.

Finally, for those who missed the November 18th Rick Mercer Report episode, we share the full sequence with members of the Canadian Paralympic Sailing Team at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron earlier this fall... Rick does a great job in front of the camera, keep him away from the helm though!

Also, get all the news and images from the Alpari World Match Racing Tour Monsoon Cup and the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Melbourne!

Finally, keep an eye on Sail-World Canada for the latest in the Melges 20 World Championship from the Ocean Reef Club in key Largo, Fl. The action starts on Dec 11th; the 52 boat roster include six Canadian teams!

All the best!
