Great Lakes events, LVC and other Canadian sailing news!

LO300 2013 - Getting ready for a light air start!  Tracey Ruiz
Line honor records were never threatened in either of the Lake Ontario 300 Challenge or the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac events this week; a massive, multi-day high pressure system stayed above the Great Lakes and delivered well below normal wind conditions for the duration of the events.

Coupled with intense heat and buzzing flies, racers found themselves experiencing challenges of a different kind this year. On Lake Ontario, many racers were looking forward to testing their skills against the revised 'offshore' Main Duck Island course but instead, found themselves hugging the shoreline rather than open waters in the hopes of catching some fleeting shore breezes; as usual, event weatherman Ron Bianchi's forecast was correct again this year. On Lake Michigan, racers were making the best out of a bad situation by keeping their sense of humor; race chair Lou Sandoval said when it comes to the Mac, the unpredictable conditions are par for the course. 'Despite all of the preparation and planning, the weather has the last say,' said Sandoval, 'In the spirit of competition the variety of weather conditions is what makes the Mac special.'

Next Canadian offshore event on the schedule is the Route Rimouski-Anticosti, 650 miles in the St. Lawrence Gulf in Quebec.

While most of the attention on the west coast should be in San Francisco, the sailing event of the summer has turned out to be rather unexciting. I must admit I'm undecided as to which is worse: the on-shore arguments or watching yachts racing with a single participant on the Luois Vuitton Cup course. I sincerely hope that the spectacle improves in the weeks to come. Meanwhile, the 2013 Transpacific Yacht Race is providing some genuine excitement. 58 entries from eight countries are now on the race course, sailing from California to Hawaii. Staggered start guns over the course of six days provided slower entries with an early start, high performance yachts that started later should eventually catch up the front of the fleet by the time they reach Hawaii.

Check out the latest Sail Canada 'Sailor of the Month' report; congratulations to Nova Scotia's Graham Mann for his contribution to the sport of sailing; I hope his Sail All program catches on in the rest of the country. Bravo also to Martin Robitaille for his bronze medal at the 2013 Finn Silver Cup! Busy times for the Canadian Sailing Team where many members are in Kingston preparing for the Laser North Americans while others are competing in the ISAF Youth World Championships in Cyprus.

All the best!
