Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for March 16, 2013
Almost three years after being announced by Prime Minister John Key, the National Ocean Water Sports Centre (NOWSC) received a planning setback on Thursday night, when a Local Board Panel did not support the concept of having administration offices for a national sports body on a waterside reserve.
The NOWSC was to have been the home of Yachting New Zealand, provided a high performance sailing facility and 1200sq metres of boat storage space.

Proposals to have some boat storage and maybe coaching and change rooms did receive support. The high-profile project has already already had one major change of direction, when the original site, alongside the Takapuna Boating Club now supported by most of the objectors, was dropped by Yachting New Zealand.
And certainly the Hearing Panel were very sympathetic to the needs of the Olympic sailors.

On the ever-changing America's Cup front, we have some more Am-Cam video from San Francisco, this time showing two extended sequences of Oracle Team USA foiling very successfully.
Gone is the clumsy foiling that we saw only a week or so ago, this looks to be fast sustained flight, albeit it not around a race course, but certainly a big step ahead.

The Defender also has time on their side, along with a second AC72 to come. But that is expected to be a serious refinement of what is being sailed now, rather than a new design concept/direction.
The value of the Am-Cam footage is that it is not heavily edited, as is most of the team and event generated video - which might be great for entertainment value, is of little use to evaluate team progress.
We also feature the second part of the interview with Jimmy Spithill in this edition, along with a reworked video of the practice race last Friday, together with a new video clip of Luna Rossa, the Italian Challenger working out against Emirates Team NZ on the beat back to the Waitemata harbour.

Another stop has been announced in the Volvo Ocean Race - the 2014/15 race to be sailed in Volvo Ocean 65 one designs will stop again in Sanya, the mainland Chinese resort. No announcement of whether Sanya will again sponsor a boat in the race. Currently entries stand at three, but with the fleet of eight expected to taken, with possibly more.

The JJ Giltanan Trophy for 18ft skiffs was a spectacular success on Sydney Harbour last month. Seven boats competed from New Zealand with a ten strong fleet sailing regularly out of Auckland. In this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter we feature a report on the New Zealand team's performance, as they look forward to completing their national Championship and then sailing in San Francisco in September.

The 18fters have developed a very solid fan following around the world, and the reports and images regularly go head to head with America's Cup material for top spot in the Sail-World story rankings. There's a message there for any sponsor looking to get exposure from being involved in an 18ft skiff campaign.

There has been a change of plan for the Etchells Class, with the initial dates for the class nationals not being viable for several sailors. The class is running a poll to find a more suitable date. See the story in this edition and make your preference known.
