What makes a ‘good' regatta, or race? What constitutes a ‘good' fleet? Last year we had Marcus Blackmore telling us that the Royal Langkawi International Regatta was the best event he'd been to in ages – in terms of Grand Prix competition and numbers. Last month we were in the Philippines for the 10-boat Boracay Cup, which the organisers were keen to describe as a ‘quality' fleet. Next week the San Fernando Race leaves Hong Kong with an expected 25 boats on the start line, where once upon a time the bi-annual trip to ‘fun in the sun' had 50+ entries. And recently we heard that some Japanese sailors though that the Hong Kong-Vietnam Race sounded like a good idea, but just didn't know about it until recently.
One thing's sure – events need to make a huge noise about themselves in order to be heard above the ceaseless hubbub of communications with which we are all bombarded these days. We are not offering a definition of what constitutes a good regatta, or a good fleet, but we all know one when we see it.
