Welcome to Sail-World Canada
Around the world in less than 80 days!
 | | Vendée Globe finish for François Gabart after 78 days Olivier Blanchet | A massive crowd waited patiently under grey skies earlier today while François Gabart helmed Macif across the Vendée Globe finish line. An amazing race for the 29-year-old French skipper, let's briefly review the numbers associated with his accomplishment; 78 days, 2 hours and 16 minutes to sail around the world; six days better than Michel Desjoyaux's previous record of 84 days set four years ago. A 24-hour distance record of 545 miles, only a few miles short of the overall monohull record set by a fully crewed Volvo 70 yacht.
Always smiling, Gabart commented that his goal was never to win the event, although he knew that this within his reach; it's only in the Indian Ocean, while dueling for the lead with Armel Le Cléac'h that he realized his dream could become reality.

Le Cléac'h is expected in Les Sables later today and will follow Gabart in the channel under fireworks and waves from the affectionate crowds. Further back in the North Atlantic, Alex Thomson has slipped into third place when Jean-Pierre Dick lost the keel on Virbac Paprec 3. Always the determined competitor, Dick hopes to complete the event without a keel and has decided against abandoning the race in the Azores and is carrying on towards the Portuguese coast in order remain close to shore while he relies on ballast from his water tanks only.
Congratulations to François Gabart and the entire Macif team!
