Welcome to Sail-World Canada
A Vendée Globe race of attrition!
 | | Jean Le Cam, Synerciel - 2012 Vendee Globe Jean-Marie Liot / DPPI / Vendée Globe © | Despite a rather slow procession through the doldrums as the fleet crosses over to the southern hemisphere, there is never a dull moment in the Vendée Globe race. Three more skippers had to call it quits this past week; first, Jérémie Beyou saw his campaign come to an end when the attachment point between the canting keel and the hydraulic ram that controls it broke, the team eventually established that the keel likely hit a submerged object. Gutek ran into on-going autopilot challenges on Energa; despite his best efforts, the prospect of steering by hand for the next two months was simply not an option and he was forced to abandon. Yesterday, Vincent Riou's good fortune ran out on PRB when the yacht hit a metallic buoy lost at sea that left a one-meter gash on the hull and broke an essential carbon piece of rigging.

Others, like Jean Le Cam, had to contend with penalties from the race committee following various infractions as the fleet crossed the shipping channels outside of Gibraltar; the time penalties ranging from 20 minutes to two hours had to be executed within 24 hours and many skippers took advantage of the slow conditions at the time to stop racing immediately and get the sanction behind them as quickly as possible.
Last week, we were very excited to share the Vestas Sailrocket new sailing world record of 59 knots but we kept our fingers crossed for Paul Larsen and his team; surely, 60 knots couldn't be far off... Yesterday, Paul was over the moon with a new sustained speed of 65 knots! Simply incredible... Congratulations to the entire team!

I had the pleasure to attend a short safety at sea presentation by Captain Eric Hill earlier this week; Captain Hill did a fabulous job introducing his comprehensive 2-day Sea Survival course to a very attentive audience. I expect many of them will be back for more extensive training on this important topic.
All the best!
