 Pantaenius the new force, GC Expo hits hyperdrive, NZ woos superyachtsEnough news to sink a ship - so take some time to scour the headlines for topics that are pertinent to your business and interests.
The local marine insurance landscape is set for a shake-up with the arrival of Pantaenius Australia, the local arm of a truly global marine insurance player.
We have the story from well-known racing sailor, Jamie MacPhail, a significant industry figure over the past two decades who is now heading up Pantaenius Australia. Later in the week, we will have the exclusive interview with Jamie on how Pantaenius is different and its plans to serve the Aussie market.
This week we also have a compelling concept from marine propulsion research & development company, Contrapel Ltd which released details of its new propulsion system for boats launched at the recent Auckland On Water Boat Show. The Contrapel Hybrid Drive is so advanced that it carries out all the functions of both propellers and water-jets with none of the drawbacks of either. It aims to make future boats more economical, manoeuvrable, safer, stronger and better for the environment.

The developers are looking for partners in its manufacture, to take this amazing concept into production.
Another concept that caught my attention is the world's first Quadski, an amphibious quad bike that clocks some speed on both sea and land, launched by a Kiwi in Detroit last week. It converts from a quad bike to a jet ski within five seconds and can reach speeds of 72km/hr on land and water. At US$40,000, it's not a toy, but would get your adrenalin pumping. We may see it on our shores next year - who knows what Maritime Safety will make of it!?
In NZ, in preparation for a big summer of superyacht visits, Auckland Viaduct Marina has launched a new website and a host of marina improvements with emphasis on making the visit easy for Superyacht captains and owners.

Superyacht Australia too is flexing its collective muscle, lobbying government and working with Australian Marine Safety Authority to simplify issues for foreign flagged Superyachts cruising in Australian waters.
It's well worth the effort, with international figures showing that the world's 6,000 or so superyachts are looking for new cruising grounds, and Australia rates highly on their wish list, and they spend up when they're at a destination, not just in terms of refits and maintenance - accepted as 10% of the value of the vessel - but often also investing in the local property market. Recent estimates place the value at around $200m+ for the local communities.

Next weekend, 2-4 November, is the second annual Gold Coast International Marine Expo, and organisers are hard at work to ensure it's a bigger and better extravaganza this year - appealing to families all over SEQld and NSW with a full calendar of entertainment, as well as behind the scenes insight into a working marine precinct, factory tours, presentations and demonstrations every 15 minutes!
For sailing enthusiasts and sporting fans, Olympic sailing gold medalists, Matt Belcher and Malcolm Page will attend the Expo Saturday 3 November.
