Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for October 13, 2012
Emirates Team New Zealand got in another two days sailing in the hottest boat in the world - taking their sailing days out to 11 by our count and an estimated 75 hours of quality sailing. Oracle Team USA have three days we believe, and about 11 hours under their belt - nine of those hours using a borrowed daggerboard from their 120ft trimaran USA-17. Artemis Racing is yet to sail. Luna Rossa launch on October 26.
What can we read into that? Probably not a lot - except that most would rather be in Emirates Team NZ's position than the others. Catch up time will come in April when the New Zealanders have to pack and head for San Francisco and then get a base established, while Artemis Racing and Oracle Team USA should be running well at that juncture.
It's early days, as they say.

One nice touch as the Emirates Team NZ AC72 swept back into Auckland harbour on Friday evening, was a pause to line up with the ORMA60 TeamVodafoneSailing, for a bit of a go to windward.
Then the AC72 turned and performed another run through the Friday night race fleet. We were there to catch the action and have a gallery in this edition from the occasion, and the reaction from some of the other yachts. We've also got a few shots from the Thursday sailing session as she headed out.
Paul Gilbert also captured the moment from the Micky Savage Memorial on the other side of the harbour. One thing is for sure when you are shooting the AC72 - you have to be quick, she is gone in a flash.
The contenders for the Sailor of the Year Awardshave been announced. In this edition of Sail-World, we have the list and images of the stars of the 2012 NZ sailing year.

The International Sailing Federation will meet in four weeks , in Dublin Ireland. The occasion will be notable for two key events.
First the election of a new President, after the incumbent Goran Petersson (SWE) rexahes the end of his eight year term. In this edition of Sail-World, we feature the profile of one of the candidates, David Kellett (AUS). It is worth a serious read, as the world governing body comes in for a reasonable amount of stick for some of its decisions and processes.

Kellett is fairly frank about what has been happening and why, and his solutions for change. In our view he is the outstanding candidate. He did an excellent job as the ISAF Technical Delegate for the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. The former being a real challenge, given the starting point and was at least the equal of Weymouth four years later. Kellett is a veteran of 38 Sydney Hobarts, and will be sailing in another this year.
The other key decision will be whether to endorse Kiteboarding to effectively replace Windsurfing in the 2016 Olympics.

After the decision was taken in May, by the ISAF Council with a slim margin majority after the Events Committee had voted 17-2 to retain the RS:X. We covered the fallout earlier in Sail-World but now the crunch time is to come, with many countries wishing to have the decision not confirmed - which will require a 75% majority. Those close to the action believe that support is at the 70% level for a reversal, which will require some fervent lobbying to get the change through. But even on those numbers it is completely wrong that a event should be able to takes it place at the 2016 Olympiad with less than majority support, regardless of the ISAF process requirements and regulations.
Getting underway about the time of the ISAF Conference, will be the 2012 Vendee Globe, singlehanded non-stop race around the world, which has attracted a good fleet of 20 entries, which would be the envy of the other Round the World races. Sailing Open 60's, more than half of the fleet is French. The event is the toughest singlehanded race in the world, and retirements are frequent. We hope to be able to follow the race on Sail-World.
