 Powerboat owner behaving badly in the Arctic agrees to pay fine

I am quite glad to hear that Paul McDonald, the Noosaville owner of a powerboat which horrified Cambridge Bay residents with their loutish behaviour last week, 'regrets' the incident and says in the Australian media that he intends to pay the fine of CA$10,000.
The only relevance in this story for the cruising sailor is that we all depend on our compatriots behaving in a sensitive way to local customs when we are visiting the ports of foreign countries. As Australians we can be proud of the good reputation that our cruising sailors have engendered abroad, and it's always sad to see that tarnished.
Sail-World was the first Australian publication (what's new?) to publish the bad behaviour, and the story quickly spread to the mainstream press. No doubt Paul McDonald and his crew will be more respectful in future - or confine their larrikinism to the Whitsundays.
In other news, the boats are getting faster, the technology is getting smarter and let's just hope that sailors are also getting more skillful. Otherwise we shall have to depend on the rescuers getting braver and more plentiful.
There were no rescuers around when a yacht got into trouble on a remote Fijian reef this week. The story had a happy ending only because of the quick actions of some divers who happened to hear their SOS in a local resort.
A French sailor has just beaten 27 knots averaged over a 24 hour period on a trimaran.

I love the fact that there are so many awards for innovation these days. It no doubt stretches the imagination of innovators, as the winners are awarded extensive free publicity for their products. The latest is from IBEX, the USA's annual International BoatBuilders Exhibition and Conference.
