 There are at least three reasons why Francis Joyon's new 24hr record is beyond amazing. First, he was sailing a 95' trimaran, single-handed – that's awesome for a start. Second, an average speed of 27.5 kts for 24 hrs takes the breath away. That's the average, remember, so you know perfectly well that the top burst speeds were way higher – that's awesome too. And then there's the distance covered, the Number of the Beast: 666 nautical miles. Hats off to Joyon for taming the beast!
Another fairly quick boat, l'Hydroptere, has put her TransPacific record attempt on hold for 2012 and will wait for a better weather window when the season comes around next year. Patience is a virtue.
In the world of match racing, Ian Williams looks set to stake his place at the top of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour once again. Williams won the World Championship in 2011, 2008 and 2007, and Ben Ainslie took the title in 2010. Which rather begs a few questions about the Brits converting WMRT and Olympic success into AC results... just a thought.
Also in the match racing department, no doubt the RHKYC is delighted to welcome Hong Kong telecom company 1010 on board for a two-season sponsorship run. Hopefully this is symptomatic of something even bigger – match racing certainly seems to be enjoying a renaissance in Asia right now. Royal Varuna is running the Match Race Thailand series, and there's a new Malaysian Match Racing Circuit just started. Throw in the AWMRT ‘shop window' events, Monsoon Cup and Korea Match Cup, and there's a lot of it about at the moment. We like match racing – a lot. It is spectator-friendly (and for non-sailors, there is a clearly identifiable winner) and otherwise rather like rugby 7s – short, sharp, entertaining and unforgiving. Crunch time on the water. During a recent visit to Hong Kong, Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss) pointed out that, "Every Vendee Globe since it started in 1989 has been won by a Frenchman. I aim to fix that." He has company in his quest - six nations represented for the next race (starts 10 November, Les Sables d'Olonne), with no less than three British skippers in the 20-entry line up - Thomson, Mike Golding and Samantha Davies.
