Sail-World New Zealand: August 27, 2012

Team Jolly blasting to the finish line on the Weymouth Bay course - 2012 Olympic regatta  Richard Gladwell
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for August 27, 2012

Main point of interest has been the America's Cup World Series sailed in San Francisco.

The performance of Emirates Team New Zealand, was a surprise for some - but maybe shouldn't have been.

For several series now - even going back into the Louis Vuitton Trophy days - the team has been slow to start and has then found the resources to pick itself up and finish fast at the end of the regatta.

This time they flat lined. In fact, it was worse than that - they often started flat and went backwards.

We have a quick analysis of some of the reasons for the team's performance. Those inside the team say that it will be a day or two before they have really got their thoughts together and work out an action plan.

One of those decisions will have to be how much priority they put on competing in the ACWS, at the expense of the AC72 program. If they decide to trade-off ACWS performance and training and spend their time on the AC72 - then expect more performances like we saw over the weekend. But also expect a better and quicker AC72 in September 2013, when the ACWS will be a distant memory.

The series was also the opportunity for many to have a look at the America's Cup venue, and the Cup courses and configuration.

While there is no doubt that the venue worked for the spectators, many of those watching on television, outside US, were a little underwhelmed. The US TV viewership figures will be interesting when they are revealed for the one day of coverage. More interesting will be whether they improve for the second regatta in a month's time.

We have plenty of reports and images - plus video - from San Francisco.

Bob Fisher has been at the ACWS since the get-go, and has provided at least one report a day. Bob has been around the America's Cup longer than most, and he is great at getting inside the action. Catch his reports on the Oracle Team USA AC72 and his chat with Louis Vuitton's Yves Carcelle.

Outside the America's Cup, we have a report from the 2012 Olympic Gold Medalists, Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie on the run up to their Olympic Regatta, plus the event itself and the aftermath. We've added a selection of images of Team Jolly taken throughout the event and on their return home.

The Moth Worlds have concluded in Lake Garda, Italy. There's a new world champion - one Australian taking over from another. There's no doubt the sailors from the Western island are on top of their game at present. That was further underlined, when you realise that Australians helmed the first and third place AC45's in the fleet racing section of the ACWS.

A Wellington crew led by Josh Junior has taken out the second stop on the ISAF Grade 2 US Grand Slam Series. We have a report and images in this edition of www.sail-world.com's newsletter.
