Sail-World New Zealand: August 25, 2012
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for August 25, 2012
|2012 Zhik Nautica Moth Worlds, Lake Garda, Day 5, Bora Gulari (USA5), and Scott Babbage (AUS3) Th Martinez|
For the past two days we have gained a glimpse of how the 34th America's Cup could shape up next year in San Francisco, as the AC45's have been competing in the America's Cup World Series.
After five of the 11 teams had capsized during practice, the scene was set for some serious carnage - which happily has not eventuated.
The racing, short as it is, makes for interesting viewing. The Jury is still out as to whether watching one multihull trail another around a match racing course, is any more exciting than watching two monohulls do the same. We won't really have the answer to that question until the AC72's line up.

As we have said many times before, right now we are comparing the spectacle of a 45ft multihull with memories of the grandeur of 75ft monohull. And if we were comparing a 45 ft multihull with a 45 ft monohull, right now, the multihulls would be way further up the excitement meter. How the AC72's transfer onto the screen, of course remains to be seen.
The racing is being shown line on Sky Channel 16, in NZ, starting at 0900 each morning (see schedule story in this edition) - so you have a chance to judge for yourself.
Emirates Team NZ has struggled in San Francisco, first with their capsize, and then with some very ordinary starts which have cost them dearly as the 11 boat fleet tries to squeeze around the first mark - a short reach from the finish. The lack of sailing time in the AC45's - due to their focus on the AC72, has hit them hard. Before making judgement on any team, pencil in the fact that several of these teams have been running dual AC45 programs, have two boats in this series, and have been training in the venue for up to a month. Others have been there less than a week in single boat programs.

To our eyes the short reach - while spectacular, ruins the race, as it is virtually over in the first rounding, and there is no opportunity to really recover, except by taking advantage of the errors of your competitor.
But again, judge for yourself.
We have the world's top sailing journalist, Bob Fisher, reporting from San Francisco for Sail-World, along with great images from some of the world's top photographers, and the reports from the teams themselves.
Rod Davis, long time America's Cup sailor, double Olympic medalist, and now top sailing coach - provides his predictions as to how the teams will perform. It is early days yet, but he would seem to have got some of it right - and time will tell as to how the game unfolds for the remainder.
Emirates Team NZ skipper, Dean Barker has also been providing a daily comment during the Practice for Nexus and Kiwi Yachting - catch his comments in this edition.

Aside from the America's Cup World Series, we have updates and images from the Audi Hamilton Island Race Week, where TeamVodafoneSailing is up against her Australian rival in the battle of the ORMA60's. Several top New Zealand offshore racers are taking on the Australians in the South Pacific Trophy - sailing's equivalent of the Bledisloe Cup, which is also being contested this weekend.
On Lake Garda, the International Moth World Championships are being staged in one of the world's top sailing venues. There is a strong editorial team in Garda - producing great images, reports and video of the event, which you can see in this edition of www.sail-world.com's newsletter or catch online at www.sail-world.com/nz
|Team Korea has put together a cross-sport sponsor partnership - America's Cup World Series Newport 2012, Racing Day 3 Gilles Martin-Raget: AmericasCup© |
On the local scene we look forward to the Auckland On the Water Boat Show, at the end of September.
There's a report on the upcoming Central Region Interclub Championship, to be staged in Wellington in the MRX fleet.
Late Friday, we had news of a new sponsorship announcement from Team Korea for the 34th America's Cu. It is a partnership between the America's Cup team and a British professional football club. We hope to have an update next week.
