 Wings, foils and sponsorships—Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond

The eyes of the sailing world are riveted on San Francisco Bay this week as the first event of the 2012-2013 America's Cup World Series (ACWS; August 21-26) kicked off with gusto, capsizes and great racing action. Eleven boats from eight different syndicates have been blasting around 'the Bay' on their wingsail-powered AC45 catamarans, creating an amazing sight for spectators and sailors alike.
Today's action started with one half of the match-racing quarterfinals, before then transitioning to two fleet races. In the match races, Oracle Racing Spithill, skippered by Jimmy Spithill, beat Luna Rossa Piranha (Chris Draper), and skipper Terry Hutchinson's Artemis Racing White defeated skipper Max Sirena's Luna Rossa Swordfish.

Not surprisingly, Oracle Racing—the Defender of the 34th America's Cup—emerged victorious in the fleet-racing portion of today's sailing, with Oracle Racing Coutts (Russell Coutts) taking the first bullet, followed by Oracle Racing Spithill in second place and Luna Rossa Piranha in third. The day's second race saw Spithill take the gun, followed by Artemis Racing Red, skippered by Santiago Lange, in second place, while Artemis Racing White claimed third place.

Meanwhile, another other turbo-charged event is unfurling on the scenic waters of Italy's Lake Garda, namely the Zhik Moth Worlds. Here, 125 Moths from around the globe have assembled to determine the fastest sailor on foils. After four days of racing, Australia's Scott Babbage leads Joshua McKnight (AUS), Bora Gulari (USA) and Anthony Kotoun (ISV)—who are all tied for second place—by a margin of nine points.
While Babbage has now won the qualifying series, the overall Worlds title—not to mention the three-way tie for second place—is still in close contention. 'I had a good day with two wins thanks to a bit of luck and a bit of skills,' said Gulari, who won the 2009 Moth Worlds. 'A few days ago I stated my goal was to finish in the top five because I wanted to be humble, but after listening to all the Australians claiming they wanted to win I will also state that my end goal is to win the worlds!'
