Sail-World New Zealand: August 22, 2012
 | | Emirates Team NZ America's Cup World Series San Francisco 2012 Gilles Martin-Raget: AmericasCup© | Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for August 22, 2012
Two significant announcements overnight from the America's Cup and Volvo Ocean Race, plus plenty of action from San Francisco, ahead of the opening round of Season 2 of the America's Cup World Series.
Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez (ESP) the 2004 Gold Medalists in the 49er class, 2008 Silver Medalists and double world champions in the 49er, have joined the Italian America's Cup Challenger, Luna Rossa. Three other sailing crew have been added along with a number of shore crew.
The Italians have a two pronged program running at present with two AC45's sailing on the America's Cup World Series, plus an AC72 currently being assembled in downtown Auckland, ahead of an expected late September launch.

It is not immediately clear where the Spanish pair will be deployed - whether it be in one of the AC45's, or if they are being held back for the AC72 program. They have both had a hectic racing program in 2012, with the Volvo Ocean racer, Telefonica - which led for the majority of the 2011-12 event, followed by a tilt at the Olympics with very limited preparation (they finished 12th), and now the America's Cup.
They bring to three the number of top 49er skippers involved in the 34th America's Cup - with Chris Draper (Luna Rossa) and Nathan Outteridge (Team Korea) also being involved in the Main Event.
Racing is gets underway tomorrow (NZT) in the first Match Racing phase of the event - stay tuned for reports on Thursday on www.sail-world.com

From the Volvo Ocean Race comes the news that an All-Women crew are the first entry in the 2014-15 edition of the race. No specific crew have been announced, but the entry is being run by Swedish based Atlant Group, who took a similar role with Volvo Ocean Race winners EF Language in 1998 and Ericsson Racing in 2009.
Whether this is the thin end of the wedge for a two boat campaign remains to be seen.

The action has started in San Francisco in the America's Cup World Series - with three capsizes in the Practice Rounds, and plenty more high speed action as the crews test the viability of racing wingsailed catamarans in the America's Cup venue.
We have full reports and images from the Practice Days, along with Emirate Team NZ's skipper Dean Barker's perspective on the venue and action.

The good news for New Zealand readers is that TVNZ will be carrying the racing live, starting tomorrow morning on two Channels. So you have the option of recording on Sky, and watching later - or watching live, as well will be doing.
The racing is on at a very convenient before work time/morning work time for New Zealanders.
We have the broadcast schedule in this edition of Sail-World. Not sure if the YouTube blocking will remain, but who cares if the coverage is Live and able to be recorded?
