The Canadian Sailing Team is poised and ready to go in Weymouth. Later today, many of the team members will join the rest of the Canadian contingent and take in the glamor of the opening ceremonies later in London. They will proudly follow Canadian triathlete and two-time Olympic medalist Simon Whitfield into the London Olympic Stadium displaying the red and white. Weather forecast for Weymouth calls for good breezes over the next week, but with the wind comes cooler temperatures and rain. The Finn class opens the on-water competition on Sunday.
Another successful Lake Ontario 300 Challenge! It was a rather slow process through the start line last Saturday morning but the breeze filled in through the early afternoon and spectators lining the Toronto waterfront enjoyed a great display as over 120 yachts raced by rounding the Gibraltar Mark in close proximity of the Toronto Islands. The fleet carried on their easterly upwind progress until the wind veered later in the day and spinnaker started to dot the horizon. We carried the spinnaker until Main Duck Island on Nick's Café before heading to the south shore in six-foot waves. The return trip along the US shoreline was a combination of glassy waters that eventually built to eight-foot waves from the new westerly breeze that filled in; the stowed spinnakers never came back out again. We were finally greeted by a massive thunderstorm on the last leg home to PCYC.

Many yachts were back in time to avoid the severe weather, including Line Honours winner Gaucho, Keith MacDonald's Farr 44 from the Buffalo Canoe Club. The 2012 Sperry Cup winner for best PHRF corrected time is Umi Taka, Dennis Dice's C&C 35 from ABYC, while PCYC's Leszek Siek's J/35 Jaeger was awarded the new Sperry Gold Cup for IRC.

In the Transat Québec St-Malo, the Open entries are taking the lead in the Atlantic Ocean as the fleet gets past Newfoundland. The Class 40 yachts are following their track with some recent changes in the lead. Mare, who had been leading since the St-Lawrence River, suffered some damage on their sprit and forced them to slow down; it was long before Geodis jumped at the opportunity to strike.

On Tuesday, Alex Thompson left New York City to put his IMOCA 60 Hugo Boss through its pace ahead of the Vendée Globe by tackling the West to East transatlantic single-handed record. He would eventually smash the record by 24 hours setting a new time of 8 days 22 hours 8 minutes. Quite an achievement!
