For those of us in Asia, sometime in the middle of the night, tonight, it's the Opening Ceremony for the 2012 Olympic Games. Stand by for as much Olympic news as we can bring you from Weymouth.

Alex Thomson has set a new the Transatlantic Single-handed Monohull Record - getting back to England just in time for the Games - good preparation no doubt for the Vendee Globe later this year.

And the Commodores' Cup at Cowes rolls into its final day. News below.

5,000-year-old boat discovered in Egypt

French archaeologists have discovered a 5,000-year-old wooden boat used by pharaohs in an expedition in Egypt. The boat is reported to be the oldest and best-preserved vessel from antiquity and has been identified as the world's oldest intact ship. Commodores' Cup day 5 - Tight competition on Hayling Bay

Rift valley discovered beneath West Antarctica gives new insight

Scientists have discovered a one mile deep rift valley concealed beneath the ice in West Antarctica, which they believe is contributing to ice loss from this part of the continent. America's Cup: Team Korea seeking to sign major sponsors for Challenge

Team Korea is still on the search for major sponsors for its bid for the 34th America's Cup. Team Design and Technical Director, Brett Bakewell-White told Sail-World today that providing the sponsorship is in place they intend to start building at the end of August. RORC Commodores' Cup 2012: overnight driftathon expected
RORC Event Press,
The race management team has set up a complex course for the offshore race, taking the boats east out of the Solent and through the Forts, before heading south to a virtual mark 17 miles out into the Channel. Once round this the boats retrace their steps north towards the Outer Nab mark, before taking a long leg east to the CS1 mark, 15 miles south of Brighton and back. 154nm in all.... [more]
