Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for July 11, 2012
In this edition of Sail-World we reveal the graphics for the proposed new location of the National Ocean Water Sports Centre, which was originally proposed for a location alongside the Takapuna Boating Club, on Takapuna Beach.
The centre is intended to be a centre of excellence for high performance sailing however after two years of planning and consultation, Auckland Council has decided to move the location away from the Takapuna Boating Club and into the current Camping Ground at the northern end of Takapuna Beach.
Whether the proposal will fly remains to be seen.
Already a Facebook page with over 3,000 followers is fighting for the retention of the Camping Ground - a battle that has been fought and won several times in the past.

The NOWSC was announced initially by Prime Minister John Key in 2010, followed by a more detailed presentation by Minister of Recreation and Sport, Murray McCully in June 2010. It was to be one of several major sports facilities, and centres of excellence throughout NZ, including the Millennium Centre and the already established national Rowing Centre at Lake Karapiro.
New Zealanders scooped the major selected awards in the Volvo Ocean Race, final Formal Prizegiving. We have details in this edition of Sail-World along with several videos outlining their involvement, or key points of the race.
Emirates team NZ's Hamish Hooper took the overall Media Crew Member prize. Dave Swete, already a New Zealand Sailor of the Year winner took out the Rookie prize, or Hans Horrevoets Trophy in memory of the Dutch sailor swept off ABN Amro Two. Team Sanya's Shore crew led by Nick Bice won the DHL Shore Crew Award.

And from Groupama, Nick Marsh won the Seamanship Award, particularly for his trips up the mast of Leg 8 to free the mainsail in atrocious conditions and assure Groupama of the overall race lead and eventual race win.
Sail-World understand that there is considerable interest in the next edition of the race, to be sailed in Volvo 65 one designs, and that organisers are being flexible with some of the conditions announced to ensure that the fleet is maximised for the 2014/15 race.

We also have an update on the VX One Design, designed by NZer Brian Bennett. The one design sportsboat is already in Australia and will be competing at the 2012 Hamilton Island Regatta.
We feature a report, video and images of early sails for the VX One on Sydney Harbour. Reports are of speeds of 128kts in 18kts of breeze, with the VX One Design being able to be sailed by two or three crew.

A New Zealand crew has finished 6th in the 29er 2012 Mid-Winter Youth Championships sailed on Waterloo bay, Brisbane.
