A fantastic Friday for Oracle Team USA in Newport, RI, Jimmy Spithill and his crew have advanced to the match race final on Sunday and topped it off with a superb victory in the fleet, passing the Kiwi leaders late in the race. A bit of a letdown for Dean Barker's ETNZ team, they enjoyed a good run early in the race despite major repairs to their wing sail following a spectacular capsize the previous day. So, it will be an all-American match racing final to watch tomorrow!

Taking first place in Leg 8 a few weeks ago was only the beginning of Groupama asserting their supremacy on home turf; Franck Cammas stole the lead from Ken Read on Puma in the second upwind leg and never looked back, winning the Bretagne In-Port race earlier today. They now enjoy a 25-point lead at the top of the leaderboard heading into Leg 9 tomorrow for the final stop in Galway, Ireland. This leg, the shortest of the entire event, will remain exciting as the fleet hugs the challenging Brittany coastline before crossing the Channel towards the Fastnet rock, where they will head up the rugged Irish west coast.
In other Volvo Ocean Race news, event CEO Knut Frostad announced a new boat for the next two VOR races earlier this week. Motivated by cost reductions in order to attract more players, the next events will be raced in identical Farr 65 yachts that will be purposed designed and built for the VOR. After a challenging 14-day northern Atlantic crossing from Nova Scotia, Gold Coast Australia has crossed the finish line to take first place in race thirteen of the 2011-12 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

Less than a month before London 2012 and the Canadian Sailing Team is ready; sailing athletes from around the world have been running practice sessions at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy ahead of the event that begins on July 29th. Adapting to ever changing conditions and open water racing on the south coast of England should provide for exciting conditions.
The offshore racing season gets in full swing back home; stay tuned for news from these great upcoming events: the Route Halifax to St. Pierre, July 8th; the Lake Ontario 300 Challenge, July 21 and the Transat Quebec St-Malo, July 22.
Speaking of offshore racing, I had the pleasure of attending a Canadian ISAF approved Sea Survival course last week in Toronto. Eric Hill from SeaSurvival.ca offers a fantastic program that can be delivered at your site; highly recommended!
