Newport welcomes the ACWS!

Volvo Ocean Race racers are enjoying their week off in Lorient; earlier this week, keen cyclist Franck Cammas lead many VOR crew members on a taste of the Tour de France through the Brittany countryside. Always the distinguished host, or maybe this was just an opportunity to showcase how the French do it, he then treated fellow skippers to a wild ride on his record breaking trimaran Groupama 3.

Welcome to Yorkshire is leading the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race scattered fleet across the Atlantic where challenging conditions over the past week have hampered progress on this leg. With upwind racing as the sole choice on the menu for the past few days, teams are running out of strategic options and find themselves at the mercy of an unforgiving Northern Atlantic ocean. Quingdao has headed back to Newfoundland to provide medical attention to British crewmember Lynn Harmer who suffered a back injury.

The America's Cup World Series is back in North America this week; the event gets underway in Newport, Rhodes Island on Thursday, June 28th. Oracle Team USA Spithill is the series scoreboard leader and has their eyes on the championship. Many fans are expected to enjoy the perfect venue with the racing course is set inside Narragansett Bay, spectators can watch from shore at Fort Adams. I'll be enjoying the fast paced AC45's winged catamarans on-line at www.americascup.com/

In local racing circles, the Lake Ontario 300 Challenge is proud to announce that loyalty and rewards platform provider Ackroo will be the title sponsor of the 2012 event. On the South Shore of Lake Ontario, Canadian teams swiped three of four top spots in the annual Great Lakes Challenge Cup hosted by the Rochester Yacht Club.

Volvo Ocean Race: Skippers try sailing at 34kts aboard Groupama
Volvo Ocean Race,
Chris Nicholson of Camper and Sanya's Mike Sanderson, along with Telefónica shore boss Horacio Carabelli, had the ride of a lifetime aboard record breaking trimaran Groupama 3. With around 20 knots of wind and some big seas off Lorient on Friday morning, Cammas gave the monohull sailors an exhilarating two hour taste of high speed multihull sailing, blasting along at up to 34 knots.... Newport Bermuda Race - Lilla victorious in Cruiser Division

In the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race, ‘Lilla', the big red Briand 76 (IRL7600) owned by Simon and Nancy De Pietro of Cork, Ireland and Mattapoisett MA, sailed a fast straight-forward race achieving victory in Class 13 in the Cruiser Division. ‘Lilla' also took first place in the whole Cruiser Division and will be presented with the Carleton Mitchell Finesterre Trophy for first place.... Protests and revelations continue to roll on the back of the controversial decision by a 19-17 vote by the ISAF Council at the Mid-Year Meeting in early May to select Kiteboarding as a 2016 Olympic event. The Kiel Week medal race was once again the crowning highlight at the close of racing for the Olympic classes and again the final of the Lasers, with a live broadcast in front of the Audi Lounge, attracted the audience. Philipp Buhl (Sonthofen) took revenge for the previous year, finishing first in the last race and thus managed to slip in front of Simon Grotelueschen (Kiel) overall.... [more]

Newport Bermuda Race - Invictus on top

In the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race, although the Carkeek 40 ‘Decision' owned by Steve Murray (New Orleans LA) was the top Onion Patch boat, the United States Naval Academy (USNA) TP52 ‘Invictus' maintains first place for individual entries with a second in the 23-boat fleet. London 2012 Olympics – Unused sailing qualification places assigned

London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition is being held in Great Britain from 29th July to 12th August. Sixty three nations will be represented after the unused qualification places were assigned. Newport Bermuda Race - Mark Watson reflects on 'race to remember'

Kiel Week - On day three of Kieler Woche, weather conditions on the race courses of the Olympic classes and the One Designs were hard to predict. After just one race, head of the organizing committee, Jobst Richter (Kiel Yacht Club), had to stop the races at noon because of a small thunder cell with strong winds that was approaching the Kiel Fjord faster than predicted.... Newport Bermuda Race record smashed

The Newport Bermuda 635 mile race record has been smashed by George David's 90ft maxi Rambler, clipping a massive 14 hours off the previous best time set 10 years ago by Roy Disney's Pyewacket. The new record now stands at 39hr, 39 minutes, 18 seconds (subject to ratification) - an average speed of 16knots.... [more]
