VOR – French win at home!

Groupama Sailing Team, skippered by Franck Cammas from France, celebrate taking first place on leg 8, from Lisbon, Portugal, to Lorient, France, during the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12. (IAN ROMAN/Volvo Ocean Race)  Ian Roman/Volvo Ocean Race©
It's the second leg win for Franck Cammas and his team on Groupama, but this one was particularly sweet for the French entry as they crossed the finish line in front of thousands of fans in their homeport of Lorient, France. Groupama 4, whose lines were penned by French-Argentinian yacht Designer Juan Kouyoumdjian, is the first French-built Volvo Open 70. The Multiplast yard, responsible for the hull construction, is located just 50km outside of Lorient while the spar builder Lorimar operates from the Lorient docks. Along with the Euro 2012, the French have many reasons to celebrate this weekend. The teams will enjoy a two-week break after a grueling finish to Leg 8 before they enjoy the Lorient in-port race on June 30th, meanwhile, Groupama will focus on strategies to preserve their 23 points at the top of the leaderboard.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is back in the news as the fleet began their Atlantic crossing to Derry-Londonderry yesterday, following a short stopover in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It all started with a competitive start in Halifax harbour and constant sail changes on the way to open water; the fleet has now split around Sable Island as some yachts are considering a more northerly route to Northern Ireland.

A popular offshore event that has run for over 100 years, the race will takes yachts of all kinds across the Gulf Stream to Bermuda where not only winds but currents will play a major role in selecting winning strategies.

Toronto Area Hospice Regatta 2011
