Sail-World New Zealand: June 12, 2012

Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for June 12, 2012

Leg 8 of the Volvo Ocean Race is well underway, and after two days of fast sailing the fleet has slowed to single digit speeds as they hit the lighter winds of the Azores High, which is parked over the rounding point of Sao Miguel.

The effect has been for the fleet to compress.

This leg is different in that it is more of a passage race, several Fastnet races rolled into one, if you will. The tactics are similar, with not too many navigational options and more of a test of speed, than picking the best part of the ocean.

In this edition, we have an extended report posted this morning, and with a video added this afternoon from aboard Camper. One of the crew, makes the comment that normally at this angle of sailing they are 1kt slower than the Juan K yachts, that occupy the first three places overall.

That's a big giveaway, and it will be interesting to see whether Camper can pull back their deficit once they hit the hard running conditions expected for the final 30 hours of the leg into Lorient.

One of the several New Zealand Match Racing teams, Full Metal Jacket, has taken out the Sails of the White Nights regatta sailed in St Petersberg, Russia. Catch their story and video in this edition.

FMJ are one of five teams competing on the international match racing circuit, who are outfitted by Events Clothing. In this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter we background how Events Clothing is working with these teams, and how proper crew uniforms can help make a statement about the crew and their professionalism - which in turn reflects well on their sponsors.

Owen Rutter, managing director of Events Clothing, goes right back to the Ceramco campaign in the 1981/82 Whitbread Race. There, like all campaigns in which Peter Blake managed, the crew had to look like a crew – and being smartly presented was vital for the boat and its backers. Even though 30 years have passed, the point is just as relevant today, as then, and properly designed crew gear can give a great return for sponsors, create a unique identity for the campaign, and be great to wear, as well.

Don't miss the great video on the Zhik Sailing Team shot and produced by Juerg Kaufmann (SUI). It is a great piece of video, not just for the sailors involved in it, but for the very clever camera work and artistry of the editing, which makes the video a unique experience. See dinghy and Olympic sailing as you have never seen it before. And make sure you flick your PC onto full screen mode, to really appreciate the action.

Stay tuned for the latest action and reports in the Volvo Ocean Race as the leg unfolds – and is expected to finish mid-Friday afternoon, local time, or in the early hours of Saturday NZT.

Collinson FX market Commentary: June 12, 2012 - Last week's correction rally was the biggest of the year but was sparked by negative news rather than positive economic data.
