The loss of Tipsy Frenz during the recent RHKYC Taiwan Strait Race has been well-covered by regional and marine press. We are delighted that all crew are now safe and sound back in Hong Kong. With the boat now at the bottom of the Taiwan Strait, there's no way of conducting a physical post mortem, but there are nevertheless a number of interesting points to come out of the event.
We have learned that although Tipsy Frenz was carrying the full complement of electronic and communications gear - radio, AIS, EPIRB, satphone etc etc - the thing that attracted the attention of the East Success was a good old fashioned red parachute flare. Are yours in date?
Once again, we have heard that a crew with Safety & Survival at Sea training knows how to cope with an emergency situation. Is your certificate in date?
In the middle of the drama, Orient Express's win has become a little overshadowed - so: congratulations one and all, and especially to Iris Chan from the RHKYC Sailing Office who now not only knows what happens after the Committee Boat turns for home, but has a Cat 1 race win on her CV as well!
