 Tacking duel in the VOR!
The last few days have been a challenging upwind battle for the six yachts in the Volvo Ocean Race; numerous lead changes as the exhausted crew are trading tacks halfway between North America and the Azores in a cold North Atlantic. It appears there is no other way around a massive high pressure system but to go North in anticipation of westerlies that will carry them to Europe in more typical fashion; who will be first to get to them...
Not far behind the VOR fleet, the Global Ocean Race Class 40 yachts also have their hands full dealing with either low winds or damaging conditions; Pheshya-Racing had their largest spinnaker destroyed by a waterspout on Thursday afternoon. Cessna Citation and Financial Crisis are in the lead some 250 miles ahead of the other two boats.
Canadian Sailing Team members are racing at the Delta Lloyd Regatta in the Netherland this week, a popular stop on the ISAF Sailing World Cup circuit.

US Sailing has released their preliminary findings following the tragic accident of Low Speed Chase in the Crewed Farallones race on April 14th; five sailors lost their lives off the coast of San Francisco when they rounded the Farallones Islands. While some of the elements are specific to the California sailing scene, US Sailing was focused on making offshore sailing a safer activity without over regulating it. The recommendations include enhanced training in seamanship, better understanding of safety through training and mandatory skippers meeting, post-race inspection to encourage compliance with minimum safety equipment and finally, improved race management and accountability for racers.
The Lake Ontario offshore racing season begins next week with the Susan Hood Trophy Race; Greg Nicoll chats with the event chair about the upcoming event.
