Sail-World New Zealand: 25 May 2012
 | | Bruce Kendall answers US Sailing's reasoning for opting for the Kiteboard at the 2012 Olympics. | Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 25 May 2012
Auckland, and indeed the sailing world, got its first peek at the new AC72 America's Cup catamarans with the shifting of the first wingsail sections from Core Builders Composites in Warkworth to the Port of Auckland.
From there the wingsails will head for San Francisco ahead of the launch of Oracle Racing's AC72, expected in July.
For America's Cup rules buffs, construction of the wingsails is permitted outside the country of the club of the team. However the boats themselves must be built in the challenger/defender country.
Southern Spars are building wingsails for both Emirates Team NZ and Luna Rossa in their facility in Avondale. Artemis Racing already have their first wingsail in action aboard their ORMA60 trimaran off Valencia, Spain.

The Volvo Ocean Race has tightened over the last day, as the boats which looked to have made race winning breaks have had to head north to avoid a patch of light winds. The effect has been for boats like Camper which yesterday was at the rear of the fleet to move into a stronger position. However on the water it is like watching a ball-runner jinking his way through an opposition backline, as the wind strengths and angles constantly change - and not just in the present time, but several days out.

To be honest we can't believe what we are seeing with Predictwind, using its routing function which had the boats all finishing within the same hour in one projection we ran. But that has been the case for the last couple of days, and are quite at variance with the official results. Long story short is that it is all very close. We have the latest projections in this edition and we'll be updating as best we can on www.sail-world.com

The debate over Windsurfing versus Kiteboarding in the 2016 Olympics continues. In this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter we have the response from double Olympic medallist Bruce Kendall to the explnation from US sailing as to why their three votes went the way of the Kites.
Quite where this one is headed is anyone's guess at this juncture. Certainly New Zealand has a significant stake in the outcome, both in terms of existing investment in development programs and equipment, and the fact that since the 1992 Olympics all of New Zealand's Olympic medals have been won in Windsurfing events.
