 Canadian sailors secure Olympic spot!
With only 17 points separating the top four yachts in the Volvo Ocean Race, important points are up for grab in the Port Miami in-port race this afternoon. The action promises to be exciting as Puma's Ken Read, in fourth place, would very much like to close the scoreboard gap ahead of Leg 7 start tomorrow where the fleet will have to negotiate the Gulf Stream, avoid the usual East Coast low pressure system on their way across the Atlantic to Lisbon, Portugal. Both the in-port race and Leg 7 start will be broadcasted live on www.volvooceanrace.com.
Congratulations to Canadian Sailing Team member Greg Douglas; with fabulous results in windy conditions at the Finn Gold Cup in Falmouth, Greg has secured an Olympic spot for Canada in the Finn class. Ben Ainslie won the event hands down; later in the week, in Land's End, he was honored as the first carrier of the Olympic Torch for its UK relay that began.

More great news for Luke Ramsay and Mike Leigh following the Barcelona 470 World Championships; they will also represent Canada at the London Games.
The America's Cup World Series is in Venice, Italy this week where local team Luna Rossa-Swordfish is holding the top spot on the scoreboard going into Day 3 of racing today. Live racing on is the America's Cup YouTube channel; the AC45 yachts are very exciting to watch, particularly in the narrow venue in Venice with the Grand Canal in the background. I am still amazed that the big event in 2013 will actually be raced in a 72-foot version of the yacht; the level of performance will be incredible!

In Atlantic Cup news, Riechers and Euverte, on the German yacht Mare, were first to cross the finish line in New York harbor and capture first place in Leg 1 from Charleston to New York City. Leg 2, a sprint race from New York to Newport, RI starts today and will be followed by the in-shore series next weekend. I love seeing those Class40 yachts finally racing in North America!
