Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 20 April 2012
As we wait for the start of Leg 6 of the Volvo Ocean Race, this weekend, in Itajai, Brazil, plus another round of the ISAF World Cup in Hyeres, France, we have several feature-type stories interspersed with all the regular sailing news.
We have an update on the FX, one of the trialists for the Olympic Womens Skiff Event. Two of the boats from Mackay Boats have been sailing in Auckland this week with top crews from Australia and New Zealand. We interview the Australian crew of Haylee Outteridge and Alison Dale in this edition and get their impression of what they would like to see in the Womens Olympic Skiff.
We're also featuring the VXOne's launch in New Zealand and Australia. The sportsboat won both Sailing World magazine's 2012 overall boat of the year award, and Sail's best boat award for 2012. Designed by New Zealander Brian Bennett, the VXOne is selling very well in USA and will feature at two Australian boat shows, plus have open days. With the Volvo due to re-launch but maybe with only four starters, depending on whether Abu Dhabi's shore crew can pull off mission impossible, we feature an interview with Team Sanya's Mike Sanderson on the future of the race.
He's seen both ends of the Volvo spectrum - from being the winning skipper in the 2005/06 Volvo Ocean Race, to mounting a lower-budget campaign on an older generation boat in the current edition. Mike has some interesting observations on the issues that face the Volvo Ocean Race as organisers try to reduce program costs and get more entries.

Probably the big news of the week is the confirmation from Oracle Racing that they will be sailing their two AC72's off the Northland Coast from February to the end of April 2013.
For New Zealand America's Cup fans, this means that a third team will be sailing in New Zealand waters in their giant 72ft wingsailed catamarans ahead of the 34th America's Cup, which gets underway in July 2013.

Luna Rossa and Emirates Team NZ will both be sailing in Auckland in this period. Whether the three groups get together for racing, is yet to be announced. We think it is unlikely, but certainly the sight of five of the AC72's sailing of the coast of New Zealand would be very memorable.
The announcement of the Oracle Racing training base establishment in Northport, is also great news for the Marsden Cove marina and residential facility which will be right alongside the AC72's in Northport, and will offer an excellent means of people getting out to see the AC72's in action. Check out their fine waterside properties which are available on their website.

On the other side of the America's Cup world comes the news that Spanish based Green Comm Challenge has withdrawn from the America's Cup World Series. There's a bit of collateral damage from this circumstance which is outlined in the story in this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter.
On the local sailing scene the Secondary Schools Teams Racing is underway at Algies Bay, and we have reports on each of the two day's racing staged to date.
This weekend the Farr MRX Nationals will be staged in Auckland on Saturday and Sunday.

On Monday evening, 15 young sailors graduated from the RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Program. We have a report and images from the evening, together with a list of the graduates. Looking back it is quite inspiring to see the sailors who have come through this program and gone on to significant achievements on the international sailing scene. Probably the leading light is Adam Minoprio - former World Match Racing Champion, New Zealand Sailor of the Year, and now crew aboard Emirates Team NZ's Volvo Ocean Race entry, Camper.
Great to see some of the more experienced sailors like Roy Dickson actively working with the Program and imparting his knowledge and values to the group. Roy's forgotten more than most of us know, and one hopes that Youth sailors realise and appreciate the input of one of the treasures of New Zealand sailing, and that this is an experience they will carry with them for the rest of their sailing lives.

Volvo Ocean Race: Camper finishes, Leg 5 is completed
VolvoOcean Race, 
After 31 days racing Camper finally crossed the Leg 5 finish line in Itajaí, Brazil, just after noon, at 12:35:44 UTC, having sailed an average of 1,400 nautical miles further and 11 days longer than their counterparts on the podium. Relief was visible on the faces of the 11 crew as they claimed fourth place in the race from one of their home ports, Auckland, New Zealand to Brazil, earning them... [more]
