Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 4 April 2012
And then there were four. Well, three really.
Two competitors have now dropped out of Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race, and a third is the subject of a major repair operation, in the Chilean port of Puerto Montt. Perhaps better known as the as the hub of the worlds largest salmon aquaculture industry, than as an impromptu Volvo Ocean Race stopover.
In this edition of Sail-World we cover the drama at the tail-end of the fleet, as hard decisions are made. For New Zealanders the memories came flooding back of the dismasting of Ceramco, just south of Ascension Island in the South Atlantic in the first leg of the 1981 Whitbread Round the World Race. The 3500nm sail under jury rig set the mark for the 'never say die' attitude that has characterised New Zealand sailing since that time. And so it will be again, over the next couple of weeks, as Camper and her crew have their work cut out to make the start line in Itajai, Brazil, ready for the In Port Race on 21 April

At the front of the fleet there is a 1,000nm match race under-way between Puma and Groupama, while about five hours astern, overall race leader Telefonica tries to get in between, and be the Itajai party pooper.

From Australia come a couple of breaking news stories. First that Melbourne has been awarded the Oceania round of the ISAF World Cup until 2016. Second that David Kellett, accomplished yachtsman and long standing ISAF servant will offer himself for election as President of the International Sailing Federation, when elections are held at the end of this year. It is not known if there will be other candidates. We feature an interview with David Kellett in this edition of Sail-World.

The third event in the ISAF World Cup is under way in Palma, Spain. Best performed is the new crew of Hamish Pepper and Jim Turner, who are leading the glittering two man keelboat, Star fleet. None of the other New Zealanders are in the top ten overall - but there are some that will move up significantly when discard performance are allowed.

In the America's Cup, the expected fall-out has started with one team announcing that they are pulling the pin on the World Series and AC72 programs. A second team Green Comm Racing, are not listed as a competitor for the Naples round of the America's Cup World Series.
And just as we were about to pick up the phone to sort out a ride for the start of the Auckland Tauranga Race, came the news that the fallout from the wrecked of the Rena had forced cancellation of the race. We have the full story and images in this edition.
