Welcome to Sail-World Canada
The Canadian Sailing Team is ready for London!
It's been a busy week with a variety of sailing news from around the world; between extreme racing in the Volvo Ocean Race, World Cup Olympic classes events and Spring events in North America, we bring you a full medley this week.
First, congratulations to Canadian Sailing Team windsurfers, Nikola Girke and Zachary Plavsic, both from the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club for their outstanding results at the recent 2012 RSX World Championships in Spain, which qualified them for the London Olympic Games. While on the subject of the Canadian Sailing Team, we'll be watching them at the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia Mapfre World Cup event this weekend in Palma de Mallorca. Also, starting this week, keep an eye out for the latest from Richard Clarke and Bjorn Tyler as the Canadian Star duo get ready for London; you can also support them via the Get on Board campaign!
Skippers in the Volvo Ocean Race no longer have to worry about pirates, fishing nets and commercial marine traffic; Mother Nature is their biggest concern as they race to the ends of the earth in the Southern Ocean. While three boats have successfully rounded treacherous Cape Horn, only Groupama and PUMA are currently racing towards Brazil, Iker Martinez and his crew on Telefonica have pulled in for repairs in the Cape Horn National Park islands. Camper is heading to Chile to repair bow damage, Team Sanya is back in New Zealand and Abu Dhabi is bringing out the rear after their restart. Definitely some changes to the scoreboard ahead!
My favorite sailing event is back for 2012; the legendary Vendée Globe is scheduled for November. You can expect many stories about new boat launch and skipper preparation over the coming weeks and months, 18 skippers are already confirmed with another dozen candidates finalizing their entries.
Finally, the Ontario Sailing Grand Prix Series has announced their racing schedule for this summer, check out the story.
All the best!
