Williams closing, Volvo war of attrition and the latest sailing news

The Volvo Ocean Race is proving to be a war of attrition with Abu Dhabi the latest casualty. Ian Walker's team has slowed to check the damage to the bow of their Volvo 70.

A good result for Nick Dempsey at the RS:X Worlds claiming silver, after the final two days were blown out.

We have news from the RC44 Cascais Cup, the Global Ocean Race leg 3 prize giving has taken place, while at sea the Clipper fleet is closing in on Oakland, California.

RC44 Cascais Cup tests boats and teams

RC44 Cascais Cup - The forecasters had said the wind would ease, but instead torrential rain bought stronger winds which tested all 15 boats and teams. Sailing with their big masthead spinnakers in the first race of the day the wind increased to 28 knots, by the final run a number of the team's fell foul to some spectacular broaches.... [more]

Volvo Ocean Race: Telefonica to stop at Cape Horn for repair session

Team Telefónica will carry out repairs at Cape Horn without stopping on land instead of heading into Ushuaia in Argentina after refining their pit stop strategy for Leg 5. Skipper Iker Martínez said the team's technical chief Horacio Carabelli would meet them by boat at Maxwell Bay, a move that should save them a significant amount of time... [more]

Volvo Ocean Race: Abu Dhabi moves north after damage assessment/repair

A fourth yacht in the Volvo Ocean Race has significant issues in the Southern Ocean, and has had to make a significant course deviation, to effect repairs. Earlier today (1600 UTC) Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) reported that Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing had slowed down to give themselves an opportunity to make a damage assessment after the team's racing yacht Azzam suffered some delamination to the hull.... Phantom Training day and Open meeting at Alton Water SC

On Day 1 of Long Beach Yacht Club's 48th Congressional Cup Gavin Brady quickly found his touch to sweep his five races. Winds for the racing before spectators on the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier were a moderately chilly and brisk 10 to 14 knots from the normal southwest, leaving boat handling paramount and the rest of the fleet tightly bunched at 3-2 or 2-3.... America's Cup: San Francisco Board approves Cup Agreement

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors today approved by a majority of 11-0, the agreement to host the America's Cup in San Francisco September 7 to 22, 2013. The San Francisco agreement calls for teams to be based at Piers 30/32 and for the America's Cup Village – the public Race Headquarters – at Piers 27/29. Sprint 15s at Grafham

On Sunday 25 March, the final event of the Sprint 15 fleet winter series was held at Grafham. An impressive 19 visitors joined eight sailors from the home club but we had to wait some time for the fog to clear before the first race could be started.
