Records, rallies, teen sailors, expanding piracy web, inventions, more
 | | Dolphins need protection and you can help .. . | Having spent many a year glorying in the hedonism of being able to dive overboard into coral and dolphin-filled tropical waters, it has always escaped me entirely why anyone would want to sail in below-freezing temperatures.
This week we tell of some sailors who have sailed further south into the Antarctic than any boat before– truly admirable, but it made me put an extra sweater on just thinking about it. These sailors have even bigger plans – read the story!
The marvelously accurate replica of Captain Cook's Endeavour has almost completed another circumnavigation of Australia - just the south west coastline to navigate and she'll be back at the Maritime Museum. As she sailed she has given some young sailors a wonderful life-changing adventure and many school children some additional verve to their history lessons. Well done again, Endeavour!
Another Swan Rally is just completed in the Caribbean,[Sydney is about to have its very first Australian Swan Rally tomorrow (Friday)], and there's news of probably the world's most famous rally, the ARC Rally across the Atlantic - fully booked, amazingly, eight months in advance.
The most unpublicised achieving teen sailor in the world must be Laura Dekker, who this year became the youngest solo circumnavigating sailor ever, but was lauded almost nowhere in the mainstream press. She has, however, been drawing good crowds at boat shows in Europe, and will eventually sail on from the Caribbean to New Zealand where she hopes to make her home.
It's sad news this week that even the Maldives now seems unsafe for adventurous cruising sailors - the piracy web spreads further and further, and that's NOT the kind of adventure that cruising sailors are seeking.
The ongoing bloody slaughter of dolphins is the focus of one young sailor about to cross the Pacific - and you can help! See how when you read the story.
Much more too, new inventions, new facilities, new studies, new cruising tales - from all the oceans and many seas.
Browse down the headlines to find your interest, and...
Sweet sailing!
