In case you missed it all, the Volvo fleet left Auckland en route for Cape Horn in ferocious conditions. Abu Dhabi ripped out a forward ring frame just five hours into the race, went back for a fix, and then declined to re-start as the weather and sea state had deteriorated even further. Stiff stuff indeed.
Back in Asia, and all eyes are on Hong Kong as the fleet gears up for the Rolex China Sea Race which starts on 04 April, with Geoff Hill's newly acquired Dubois 90, Genuine Risk, a good bet for line honours, and hoping for a crack at the race record. And of course right after the RCSR is the Commodore's Cup in Subic - definitely worth sticking around for.
And it's only six weeks to go to the Top of the Gulf Regatta at Pattaya, Thailand. Organisers are expecting a bumper fleet to fill up the newly-expanded berthing at Ocean Marina. If you count the beach cats, the Platu OD division and the Thai Oppie Nationals as well as the Big Boats, there should be 300 boats on the water. And it's not too late to join in what is always a first class event - just go to http://www.topofthegulfregatta.com/, wave your credit card or slip a few dollars through PayPal, and you're in. Can't say it's hard to enter, can you?
Sail-World Asia is looking forward to reporting from somewhere rather warmer and less grey than Hong Kong. Bring it on!
