Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 20 March 2012
Auckland is in recovery mode from a heady Volvo Ocean Race stopover, which rekindled the old Round the World magic, and attracted much favourable comment from international visitors.
The reaction from those who have been to the other race venues so far, was that Auckland was outstanding.
Where elsewhere a spectator fan fleet of just a handful of boats, (not associated with sponsors) would accompany the incoming and departing yachts, in Auckland there were what - five hundred or a thousand boats on the water? And that was on some very unaccommodating weather.
As anyone who takes images is only too well aware, the backdrop is all important. The backdrop that Auckland provided was that of masses, tens of thousands, of spectators there to see the event, the boats and the sailors.
That view creates the impression that the event is going off, and those taking the images can focus on the big picture, and show the crowd scenes rather than just focus on the close shots of the boats and sailors, and not reveal that ashore numbers are a little thin on the ground.

For the Viaduct Harbour and Events Centre, together with the surrounding watering holes and eateries, the event was a huge success, with close to 300,000 visitors expected to have passed through the area by the end of the event. The Auckland facility also showed how the event and industry could work together, and hopefully this stopover has set the benchmark for Auckland's sailing event future.
On Thursday, we had the privilege of a ride aboard overall race leader Telefonica. It was great to see Iker Martinez, a world and Olympic champion, in action. Catch the story of the day, plus images and an on-board video - so you can share the experience. (Audio is mostly in Spanish - but it is remarkable how little conversation there is on board.)
Yes, Volvo news has dominated Sail-World for the past week or two, and we will revert to our more normal fare from here on.
But we do have a lot of material in the bag, looking at the halfway point in the race, including one outstanding interview we got with Ken Read, skipper of Puma, the day before the fleet left Auckland. We'll be running these over the next week or so, along with some more image galleries from the start of Leg 5.

The Volvo Ocean Race was also a good opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet some new. One who we hadn't seen for years was Scott Taylor, who has made a name for himself for the past 17 years in UK as a professional freelance photographer, he's shot some of the major world sport events, competitors and also some of the great singers and bands. The Volvo stopover was his first sailing event (although he was planning to sail back to NZ). We feature a couple of his galleries, but for some great images check his website www.scottiet.com
Away from the Volvo spotlight, three New Zealand sailors, Mark Orams, Scott Leith and Michael Keeton won three of the four Laser Radial titles at the Laser Masters Worlds in Queensland. New Zealanders were in the top ten of all other divisions.
We have a report in this issue on the event, along with the Leander Trophy for the R-Class (see how the foilers fared against the non-foiling boats).
