Sail-World New Zealand: 13 March 2012
 | | Groupama finishes almost 12 hours ahead of the second placed Puma, with the rest of the fleet finishing inside two hours Richard Gladwell | Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 13 March 2012
Auckland was treated to a rare sight in trans-oceanic racing on Sunday, as five Volvo Ocean Racers crossed the finish line within a couple of hours of each other.
The finish was remarkable for the fact that the boats had been sailing for almost 20 days and over 5,300 nm - more if you take into account sailing distance. The chase up the harbour by a flying Camper, was the sort of thing you expect to see in a Wednesday night race.
Now Auckland gets to enjoy what it has missed for the past decade, and the Volvo Ocean Racers get a taste of the ambiance of the new Viaduct harbour - which is just a magnificent facility. If you want to get a taste of what sailing is like in Heaven, go down to the Viaduct during the Stopover, on a bright Auckland summer's day and immerse yourself in the sailing atmosphere and the ambiance.
Sail-World's camera was at the Viaduct today, but the pictures just don't do justice to the venue and atmosphere.

Tomorrow afternoon Emirates Team NZ and Camper are holding a media conference, we'll be reporting after that. And then there will be daily report and images on the racing.
There is a Camper Emirates Team NZ open day from 4.30pm to 8.30pm - just turn up at the base in Halsey Street and follow the signs.
And from 7.00pm to 7.30pm on the stage in the Volvo Village there will be a crew member on stage from each boat ready to answer questions from the public.

On Thursday evening the Prizegiving takes place in the Cloud, and we'll bring you reports from that function as well.
Make sure you check out the Events Centre and see the Marine Industry exhibits - there's some key players in the New Zealand marine industry represented.
