A smorgasbord of news from the world's oceans again this week... tales from the adventurers, both admirable and reprehensible. While outrageous Norwegian Jarle Andhoey finishes his illegal voyage to Antarctic and takes his stowaway towards South America, diminutive Dutch teen Laura Dekker is merely going back to school after becoming the youngest ever circumnavigator - but not in her home country.
Most people who love 'messing about in boats' also want their boating heritage preserved. Over in Egypt they are to restore a 4,500-year-old boat with a helping grant from Japan, but it's not always as easy as this. A South Australian consortium has raised sufficient money and become the favoured syndicate to restore the world's oldest Clipper, the City of Adelaide. They have even sent a cradle over there to start the job. But that's not good enough for the good people of Sunderland, where the sailing ship was built, and the squabble goes on!
If you are anywhere near enough to attend the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney's Rushcutter's Bay on the 3rd April, you'll find the one-seminar-only 'Beyond First Aid' course vital for your ongoing sailing plans. 'Normal' First Aid courses, good though they are, are of only marginal help for the medical emergency at sea.
On a more practical plane, Caroline Ajootian gives us some warnings about the traps of buying a boat at a distance (and there are many many Australians doing that at the moment); some quick tips to check you have a couple of simple pieces of 'jack-gear' to make the cruising life easier and safer; and a Coast Guard veteran gives some reminders about those all-important briefings for guests (and occasional crew) on your boat.
