Camper were lucky to escape with a fourth place from the Volvo Ocean Race - In Port Race, sailed in Sanya, China yesterday evening (NZT). A tactical error on the opening leg when they tacked away from the fleet and lost contact with the top boats, cost Camper dearly.
Ken Read, skipper of Puma Racing had a great saying about banging the corner, as they did in Leg 3 after leaving Singapore 'Welcome to Cornersville, Population 1'- it applies at all levels from Optimists to Volvo as the Kiwi team found out to their cost last night.
Read would have been pleased with their second place - more on morale grounds, but the points are very nice, thank you.
For much of the race Camper were a humbling last, but hauled back two boats to minimise the damage somewhat. They lost more points to Telefonica, but got a small points gain over Groupama.

Soon after the finish of the race organisers announced that the start would be delayed for Leg 4 to Auckland, by 12-24 hours to allow the worst effects of a monsoon to pass through. We have the story on what will happen in this edition, however the effect is that a day will probably be cut off an already short eight day stopover in Auckland.
On the first weekend in March the Clash at the Cove, will be staged at Marsden Cove taking in feeder races from Auckland and Opua. Joining the fleet this year will be the TP52 Kia Kaha, the ex World Cup and Med Cup front runner now owned by Chris Hornell from the Bay of Islands. Registrations close Feb 29 - Enter Here
