Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 10 February 2012
There has been plenty of sailing action over the last few days.
On Thursday and Friday morning, Sail-World participated in two online media conferences with Russell Coutts and Iain Murray, both had some common themes and specific points of interest. We have one of those in this edition - the statement that a significant US TV deal is imminent.
While TV coverage in NZ is taken very for granted, with every race, of every Louis Vuitton and America's Cup being covered either live or on a highlights program since October 1986. That is not the case elsewhere in the world.
So the Free to Air broadcaster announcement in US is significant - both for the fan base there, plus the America's Cup generally, and the exposure it will give Challenger sponsors and the event.

The other area of focus has been the crew numbers of the AC72, and the realisation that with just 11 crew, and six of those grinding, there aren't going to be any spare hands aboard. We'll cover this in more depth on www.sail-world.com
There were a few more issues raised, which will be explored further. Despite the doom and gloom that emanated from Murray's comments earlier about their being only three Challengers for the Louis Vuitton Cup, there has been a lot more optimism from other sources we've spoken to - who aren't connected. But time will tell.

Yesterday afternoon, we caught up with Ross Field on his way to the specialist to consult on the treatment for his injured back. Recovery is likely to be several months. We talked to him about what happened in the Global Ocean Race, and where to next for Buckley Systems. Field didn't pull any punches in his comments about the race organisers, who would seem to have only two of their five competitors on side. Quite where this race is headed remains to be seen, however in our view you can't do what has been done in this race, without granting the affected parties redress and allowing them a reasonable opportunity to get back into the race.

Staying with the America's Cup, there's been another success story for a New Zealand company, with Nelson based Naiad being commissioned to build four inflatable support vessels for the Oracle Racing AC72 program. We have details in the issue. The boats are designed in Nelson, and constructed in Newport.
The decision of the Royal Yachting Association is out on the Ben Ainslie case from the 2011 ISAF World Championships in Perth. Predictably it was 'he has been punished enough'. Whether the International Sailing Federation see it that way is another matter. It is hard to see Yachting Australia taking action - given that ISAF is the superior body in this issue.
