High drama in the Global Ocean Race, with two of the five competitors pulling out of the leg and are headed for Auckland.
Buckley Systems sailed by Ross and Campbell Field, wiped out, causing damage to their mast head instruments, which in turn rendered the autopilots ineffective. Further, Ross Field suffered a heavy fall in the incident and is in considerable pain. On that basis, they made the decision to head back for Auckland, and should be here within a week.
A second competitor, Campagne de France, also pulled out in the face of strong headwinds, deeming it too dangerous to continue.
Ross Field is critical of race organiser's decision to route the competitors to a northern waypoint, and believes that decision set them up to be smacked by the Pacific storm, while a more southerly route would have seem them on a much more comfortable course and still with five boats in the race.

The 470 Junior Worlds concluded in Auckland yesterday under leaden skies and a moderate breeze - conditions which have prevailed for much of the regatta.
The event will not go down as one of New Zealand's sailing success stories - with only one crew stepping up on the winners' podium. Congratulations to Finn Drummond and James Turner for their silver medal in the Open and Mens division - having sailed together for just three weeks prior to the event.

The World Championship - which was dominated by the Italian crew of Simon Sivitz and Jas Farneti, with eight back to back wins. Normally this event would attract an entry of 80-100 boats, when held in Europe, instead of just the 31 that entered in Auckland, but having 13 countries in NZ is a very good spread.
Takapuna Boating Club, with Event Director and Commodore, Evelyn Johnson, did their usual sterling job of organising the regatta - which is the club's 15th World Championship, going back to the early 1970's.

Many of the competitors move onto the Sail Auckland Regatta which gets underway today, on Auckland Harbour.
The Volvo Ocean Race is expected to end within the next 12 hours, and barring a major incident will be won by the Spanish entry Telefonica, giving her a third leg win in the series and extending her lead.

The Emirates Team NZ and Luna Rossa AC45's are becoming a familiar sight on Auckland's Waitemata Harbour - often featuring the extended wingsail - which makes the old foil look quite squat by comparison.
We have the first images of the two AC45's sailing together in this edition and expect more in the coming weeks.
At Sail-World, we have to tread a fine balance between the mix of international news which outside of America's Cup, Volvo Ocean Race and major sailing events don't really make it into the mainstream sports media. Sometimes on Sail-World, the local sailing news gets pushed off the main page very quickly.
