Sailing life has been a little quiet over the past few days.
Not that there is nothing happening. And not that it will stay that way for long.
The Bay of Islands Sailing Week started on Monday, in this edition we have reports from the first two days, along with some excellent images form Will Calver of Oceanphotography who is in the Far North for the duration of this outstanding regatta.
The Volvo Ocean Race rumbles on, with the fleet on a long port tack in light to moderate winds.
Overnight we have got our positioning system running, which was shut down while the boats entered and exited the Stealth Zone. A look early this morning showed that while Puma and Camper are currently shown as leading, the north is poised to come into play. That is where event leader, Telefonica is positioned, and we expect to see her take the lead soon.
The course for the Leg involves a lot of island dodging, plus the weather feed is not that reliable long term (two weeks out), so today we will break the leg into two pieces and get a more accurate fix on what we believe will happen in the coming days and will report on www.sail-world.com. The leg finish is currently predicted for 10 February.

We have been working on a couple of issues with Sail-World over the past two days.
First, the speed with which stories open should have improved significantly. We have been fielding reader complaints on this issue for a couple of weeks, but suspect that the problem has been around much longer than that. While we run all three Windows platforms, plus Mac, iPad and iPhone, plus all available browsers it is not easy to replicate issues - which can be due to a local circumstance. So we appreciate reader feedback. Just tell us what the issue is, the browser you are using and the Windows/Mac system you running, and hopefully can replicate it.
We are constantly changing the Sail-World system to bring in new features, systems and efficiencies. While we do test quite rigorously, problems occasionally slip through into production. So we appreciate your help in bringing these to our attention. Stories should now open within 4-8 seconds depending on their content (ie number of images etc). On the New Zealand website www.sail-world.com/nz (we run 19 sites worldwide on Sail-World) we have introduced a new navigation button New Zealand Sailing. We have to tread a fine balance between the mix of international news which outside of America's Cup, Volvo Ocean Race and similar events don't really make it into the mainstream sports media. Sometimes on Sail-World, the local sailing news gets pushed off the main page very quickly. The New Zealand Sailing section www.sail-world.com/NZ/kiwinews will have NZ Sailing news only. We have done a retrospective update back to mid-January. Sail-World ran 400 stories in the last 12 days, with a dozen or so of those being NZ News. If you wish, you can set a bookmark for the NZ Sailing News site, and go straight there. All news (NZ and international) will still be on the main Sail-World site.
All is not quiet on the America's Cup scene. We are aware of three cases running with the International Jury on the subject of partnerships and team collaboration. One has already been decided, another is in the same vein (believed to be Oracle Racing asking for further interpretations on a hypothetical competitor), and the third on specifics of the Luna Rossa and Emirates Team NZ partnership.

We will be publishing a view on these issues in due course. Suffice to say that for an event that looks set to have just three teams contesting the Louis Vuitton Cup, we would have thought that there would have been more emphasis on getting more teams up to AC72 level rather than trying to hobble new players.
Secondly for an event that set out to reduce the level of rule interaction that had bedeviled previous regattas, seeking an interpretation of a rule that contains two clauses each over 100 words in a single sentence and which is rated as 'incomprehensible', is just a nonsense.
Thirdly we believe the initial Jury Interpretation, was unbalanced for reasons and logic which will be explained.
And finally most informed sailing media are wondering how a three boat Challenger Selection Series can be staged over almost a two month period, and maintain the interest of sailing fans. At the end of that phase, just one team will be eliminated before the remaining two contest the Final of the Louis Vuitton Cup itself.
Can you imagine that happening in any other sport? We can't. The recent Rugby World Cup ran for six weeks to eliminate 18 teams before the Final - and many thought that elimination process lost its way.

At the Competitors Forum to be held in Auckland at the end of March, it is maybe opportune for some to take a long hard look in the mirror. Stopped trying to get one up on the other team in the Jury Room. And started acting in the best interests of what was the most prestigious event in sailing.

Global Ocean Race - Cessna Citation ready for Leg 3
