 Around the world in 45 days!
Times have changed since French writer Jules Verne published his classic adventure novel Around the World in Eighty days back in 1873 and, while the route and means of travel selected by Loick Peyron and his crew on board Maxi Banque Populaire V differ significantly from the travels of Phileas Fogg and his French valet Passepartout in the original story, the accomplishment remains phenomenal. For his trouble, Loick Peyron becomes the current holder of the Jules Verne Trophy, awarded to the yacht that completes the fastest circumnavigation of the world; originally created in 1985 and in deference to Verne's story, the trophy was originally to be awarded to the first yacht to sail around the world in less than 80 days. Interestingly, in 1983 it was Bruno Peyron, Loick's older brother, who was first to get his name engraved on the trophy with a time of 79 days; Bruno would win the trophy again in 2002 and 2005, improving his time to 50 days on board Orange II, a record that lasted until Franck Cammas on Groupama 3 improved it to 48 days in 2010.
Putting things in perspective, Loick Peyron and his thirteen crew members on the 40 meter trimaran Maxi Banque Populaire the have covered a distance of 29000 miles at an average speed of 26.5 knots; simply incredible!
In Abu Dhabi, the Volvo Oacean race teams are getting ready for the next point scoring opportunity, the Etihad Airways In-Port Race scheduled for Friday, January 13th. After doing poorly in the first in-port race in Spain, Team Telefonica has climbed to the top of the leader board with their subsequent Leg 1 and Cape Town in-port race wins, followed by another two fop finishes for both parts of Leg 2. On Saturday the 14th, the fleet will depart for their next destination, Sanya on Hainan Island in the South China Sea.
