Around noon today (NZT) and just before midnight local time, the 40metre French trimaran, Banque Populaire V skippered by Loick Peyron, crossed the finish transit off Oessant, France to set a new round the world speed sailing record, and to claim the Jules Verne Trophy.
Sailing in winds of 25kts and at speeds of up to 30kts she slashed the old mark by 2days 18hrs. Even more remarkably she set her distance ahead of the reference point, of about 2,000nm by the time she was half way around the planet, and held on to this margin for the remainder of the voyage.

On Tuesday night, three time Olympic Gold Medalist, Ben Ainslie, will make an announcement as to his plans going forward, as the corporate types are want to say, from 2012. We strongly suspect that he will be announcing an America's Cup involvement, and speculate on the options in this edition.
The last time Britain actually sailed in an America's Cup Match was in 1964 - almost half a century ago, and despite a number of promising attempts, all the Challenges have ended in tears. Latest of these was Sir Keith Mills and Team Origin, of which Ben Ainslie was a lynch pin.
Certainly the British paradox of how they can be so brilliant at the Olympics, but so dreadful at the America's Cup, is one of the most intriguing debates in sailing. Maybe Ben Ainslie has found a new way.

The 2011 Optimist Worlds continue at Napier. We have the latest report and video in this edition of Sail-World. Organisers will have their work cut out, as the regatta plays its final stanzas - with a tropical depression moving down the East Coast - and bringing strong onshore winds and rain to the 200 strong fleet.

In New Plymouth, the Paper Tiger Nationals have been completed with strong winds and rain again featuring. We have daily reports from the event in this edition. Great reporting, and our thanks to the PT's media arm - using the Sail-World news submission system.

Also great to see the PT's are still going strong - hard to believe that the class was designed in 1968 and that over 3,000 boats have been built to the Ron Given plans. But then we shouldn't be surprised as the PT attracted exceptional interest when she was first launched; always punched above her weight; and is a design breakthrough on a number of fronts.
