If you're a sailor – likely enough if you are reading this – then all the buzz at the moment is about the Rolex Sydney-Hobart Race. After a nip-and-tuck race, Investec Loyal squeezed across the finish line just three minutes in front Wild Oats XI, after 623 nm and three lead changes in the last part of the race. There's a full Rolex Sydney-Hobart newsletter on the way, which will provide a full round-up.
The ‘public' part of the race - Line Honours – is over, but of course the sailors' part – the Tattersalls Cup handicap prize - is still running.
Geoff Hill's TP52 Strewth, a Hong Kong boat, is still in the hunt, but sadly another HK boat Ffreefire 52, skippered by Russ Parker, is back at the CYCA in Sydney having retired. “It's a long story,” said Parker. “We were unable to either reef of hoist the tri-sail, so we could not cross the Bass Strait. Everyone safe and sound, but a bit blue.” (All boats in the Hobart Race are required to declare themselves ‘good to go' before passing Gabo Island at the southern tip of New South Wales and entering the Bass Strait, so this was a real race-stopper).
Back in Asia, sailors are getting ready for the first calendar event of the year, the Royal Langkawi International Regatta. If you're up for some racing around scenic, sea eagles, and some grade A parties, this is for you. Check out the website www.langkawiregatta.com
We're almost into 2012 – welcome to the New Year, and welcome to another 12 months of warm-weather sailing! In the next newsletter we'll be providing a full list of the sailing events of 2012 in the region – well, as full as we can. Sharpen your pencils, and prepare to mark your diaries.
