Marine Qld adds show, Camper eschews fads, Rolex Sydney to HobartHope you all had a wonderful Christmas and if you're back on deck, looking forward to a few more public holidays ahead before the calendar ticks over to 2012.
While this week is relatively quiet on the marine industry news front, there is more than enough happening on the yachting horizon to keep you occupied for a few days over the break. For the Rolex Sydney to Hobart, Sail-World.com is where all the action and discussion is happening - including the pros and cons of real time tracking, which has the effect of making the race too predictable by some accounts.
Down here at Tuross Head on the NSW south coast we have witnessed the last of the Sydney to Hobart yachts skudding down towards the finish line - a majestic sight, albeit from 6 nautical miles from our house!
There's also news and features around the Volvo Ocean Race, including a brand history of Camper - the little Spanish brand that has burgeoned into an empire, still based on peasant pedigree and a distinct distaste for fashion fads.
Marine Queensland has resolved that 2012 will be the year of innovation and meeting challenges head on - with another boating experience added to the state calendar and aimed at giving visitors a 'hands-on' introduction to the boating lifestyle. Manly Boat Harbour in Brisbane will be the location for this new event, called at this stage the 'Consumer Interactive and Participation Event', and scheduled for 21 to 23 September 2012.
Also in Brisbane, Rivergate Marina and Shipyard has enjoyed a busy spring-summer of refit and refurb work, including the impressive 48m superyacht, Aquamarina, using for the first time in Australia, a specialist effect paints are usually reserved for use on high end luxury cars. Check her out in all her glory for some inspiration for your boating escapades over our southern hemisphere summer - such that it is.
We will have heaps of news about the full calendar of events, boat shows and opportunities coming up in the New Year, so standby and visit regularly.
Hope the skies are clearing where you are and the swell is consistent.
Happy New Year!Jeni Bone, editor
